Special teams and short fields ended up being the difference as Olpe improved to 4-0 on the season with a 28-14 home win over Jackson Heights. The Eagles scored four times, including three drives that started inside the Cobra 40-yard-line and another 59 yard drive just before halftime that needed a miracle type play to set up a long touchdown pass to tie the game 14-14 at intermission.
Trailing 14-7, Olpe faced third down and 20 after a delay of game penalty and quarterback Colby Hoelting somehow escaped a second sack on the possession to find Wylie Redeker in the middle of the field to convert. Hoelting was crushed on the play and went to the sideline while backup signal caller Damon Redeker came in and promptly tossed a beautiful 33-yard touchdown strike to Dawson Soyez with 52 second left in the first half.
The start of the contest couldn't have gone better for Jackson Heights, come off a tough fourth quarter loss against NEKL foe MH-MA the week before at home. After the game was moved up to start 90 minutes sooner, Jackson Heights went on an opening drive that last 10:18 and covered 68 yards in 21 plays before Cooper Williams cashed in on a four-yard touchdown run. After an exchange of punts, Olpe answered quiclkly however with Damon Redeker's long return setting up a short 33-yard field. Jordan Barnard called the three play drive with a four-yard TD run to tie the score at 4:32 in the second period. Cooper Williams then broke free on a 57-yard TD run for Jackson Heights and added his second PAT to make it 14-7.
Jackson Heights however could not get anything going in the second half as the Cobras went three-and-out on all three possessions in the third quarter. Olpe meanwhile kept winning the field position battle, helped in part by a 57-yard punt from Redeker, and scored on another 33-yard drive with Kynden Robert scoring from six yards out to make it 21-14 with 2:31 left in the third frame. Robert scored again on the next Olpe drive with a nine-yard-run at the 10:24 mark in the fourth quarter. That's when the game was halted because of lightning and delayed for 80 minutes.
Jackson Heights had a pair of impressive runs by Dylan Thompson when play resumed, but then a Cable Wareham pass was picked off and the signal caller was then sacked and fumbled on the last Cobra drive before the Eagles milked the clock for the win.
Citizens State Bank and Trust Company of Hiawatha "Player to Bank On," Williams had 117 of his 123 yards rushing in the first half and the Cobras had only three first downs after the break. Taylor Wamego was the Giant Communications "Lineman of the Game." Thompson added 57 yards before Jackson Heights fell to 2-2 on the season and will host Valley Heights (4-0) next week.
