The Clifton-Clyde Eagles now lead the series against the Washington County Tiger 11-8, having not lost since 2003.

The Sylvan-Lucas Mustangs have jumped out in back-to-back seasons 5-0, however in week six last season the Mustangs took the first loss of their 7-2 year to Victoria 54-12. This is also the first back-to-back season starting 5-0 since 1998 and 1997, the Mustangs won 8M-II state in both those years. Last Friday the Mustangs beat Lakeside Downs 50-8 in a stunning defeat, and they look to continue their tear as they currently outscore their opponents 266-28 on the year.

This will be the first all-time meeting between both teams.

Brandon’s Pick: Sylvan-Lucas
Justin’s Pick: Clifton-Clyde
Kryndon’s Pick: Sylvan-Lucas

This is the first time the Tigers have started a year 0-5 since their 2017 season where they finished 0-9, the last year they were in 1A football. The Tigers lost 48-0 last week against the Clifton-Clyde Eagles and now fall back in the all-time series 11-8, having yet to have a win against the Eagles since 2003.

With the win, the Mustangs improved to 7-2 all-time against Bennington. Valley Heights and Republic County are 2-0 in district play with Valley Heights leading because of points. Those two teams are set to meet in week seven.

Brandon’s Pick: Valley Heights
Justin’s Pick: Valley Heights

Silver Lake has won the last two meetings including a 40-24 triumph last season.

Brandon’s Pick: Silver Lake
Justin’s Pick: Silver Lake
Kryndon’s Pick: Silver Lake

(5-0) Osage City at (3-2) St. Marys

2A District 4

(4-1) Nemaha Central at (4-1) Sabetha – Big East – 92.1 KMZA & Sabetha Channel

Another impressive win for the two-time defending 2A champs last week defeating Oskaloosa 48-6. Carter Hajek found the endzone four times and rushed for 141 yards on just eight carries. He completed 4 of 5 passes for 54 yards and a touchdown to Caleb Strathman. Jayden Seitz added four carries for 47 yards and a touchdown. The Thunder have won four straight since their week one loss to Marysville.

Sabetha continues to win games thanks to the defense, and it continued last week with a 38-0 win against ACCHS. The Bluejays scored 14 points in the first quarter and led the game 28-0 at halftime. The Bluejays defense held the Tigers rushing attack to just 78 yards on 44 carries which comes out to less than two yards per carry.

These two teams are all too familiar with one another and this game tonight could very well decide the district champion. Since 2005, Nemaha Central is 15-8 against Sabetha including winning the last five meetings. Sabetha’s last win over the Thunder was 2020. NC eliminated Sabetha in the semifinal round of the playoffs in each of the last two seasons.

Brandon’s Pick: Nemaha Central
Justin’s Pick: Nemaha Central
Kryndon’s Pick:

(2-3) ACCHS at (3-2) Royal Valley

ACCHS couldn’t get much of anything going on offense last week as they were blanked by Sabetha in a district game 38-0. They averaged less than two yards per carry and finished with 80 rushing yards. The loss to Sabetha snapped a brief two-game winning streak as they had big wins over Valley Falls and Oskaloosa leading up to that game last week.

Royal Valley got a big win on the road last week at Perry-Lecompton winning 12-8 in what was a non-district game. The Panthers trailed 8-6 at halftime but got the go-ahead touchdown in the third quarter on a 19-yard run by Jaxson Stevens. Stevens finished with over 100 rushing yards while Manny Oliveira finished with 60 yards and a first quarter touchdown.

This will be the first meeting between ACCHS and Royal Valley since 2009. Between 2004 and 2009 the teams played five times with Royal Valley holding the 4-2 edge. Royal Valley has won four straight while ACCHS is looking for their first win over the Panthers since 2005.

Brandon’s Pick: Royal Valley
Justin’s Pick: Royal Valley
Kryndon’s Pick: Royal Valley

3A District 4

(0-5) Jefferson West at (1-4) Perry-Lecompton – Big East

Jefferson West is in danger once again to miss the playoffs this season as they dropped to 0-5 last week with a 48-9 loss at home against Holton. The Tigers gave up 27 points to Holton in the second quarter and they trailed the game 34-3 at halftime. Jefferson West scored 14 points in week one against Riley County and since then they’ve scored a total of 11 points in their last four games.

The Kaws lost another close game last week at home to Royal Valley 12-8 after leading the game 8-6 at halftime. They had a chance to get the ball back in the fourth quarter to potentially put together a game winning drive, but the defense allowed the Panthers to run off the last seven minutes of the game. Garrett Metcalfe rushed for 81 yards while Eli Dean rushed for 46 yards. The Kaws lone touchdown in the game was on a 12-yard run by Tristan Gorden.

The loser of this game will more than likely miss the playoffs or would need to put something together in the final two weeks to back their way in. The Kaws have won four straight against the Tigers including last season 19-12. Jefferson West is looking for their first win over the Kaws since 2019. Since 2006, Perry-Lecompton is leading the series against Jefferson West 9-5.

Brandon’s Pick: Perry-Lecompton
Justin’s Pick: Perry-Lecompton
Kryndon’s Pick: Perry-Lecompton

(4-1) Hayden at (3-2) Holton – Holton Channel

It's a battle of Wildcats likely for the district four title as Holton tangles with Hayden here in week six. Holton has won three straight games after a pair of tough one-point losses to start this season. Last Friday, the Cats ran for 362 yards and had five different players score while putting together a 34-3 first half that turned into a 48-9 win at Jeff West.  Kyler Jackson had 98 yards while Korban Wilson added 94 and the Holton defense forced four turnovers while also blocking another punt.

After beating Hayden twice in 2022, Holton lost to Hayden twice last year including 42-14 in sub state. Hayden has won six of the last eight meetings with Holton and this year Hayden is 4-1 with a lone loss to weeks ago 31-28 against Wamego. Justin’s Pick:
Kryndon’s Pick: Holton

Non-District

(2-3) St. Paul at (5-0) Axtell

That marks now back-to-back games where the Indians only reach the endzone once and allow their opponent to put up 52+ points. St Paul’s defense allowed 142 yards passing with 2 air touchdowns. On the ground St Paul also got dominated by giving up 125 rushing yards and 3 touchdowns. The offensive line also gave up four sacks onto their quarterback and couldn’t hold the pass rush all night. St. Paul also had a fumble on offense as well as an interception.

After the 50-0 win over the Wakefield Bombers last week, the Axtell Eagles have now taken the Kansas record for an 8M-II team winning the most games consecutively in a row with 44 straight wins. The Previous record was 43 straight wins held by Hanover, who had their streak broken in 2019 under a 28-26 win by the Axtell Eagles. Brandon’s Pick: Axtell
Justin’s Pick: Axtell
Kryndon’s Pick: Axtell

Hiawatha played a state ranked team last week on the road at Hayden in district play and lost the game 49-0. The Redhawks couldn’t keep the momentum going after they picked up their first win in week four against Jefferson West. In their four losses this season, the Redhawks have only been able to score 13 points and have been shutout three times.

It was their fourth straight win against Washington, and they’ve won nine of the last 10 overall. Atchison has outscored their opponents during their four-game winning streak 214-36.

This game could decide the Meadowlark Conference title as Atchison looks to win it once again, but these two teams are currently undefeated in league play. Atchison is 3-0 against Highland Park winning last season 64-8, 70-56 in 2022, and 47-36 in 2021.
