Dragons Fall in 2A State Semifinal to Moundridge

2A Boys State Semifinal in Manhattan: Moundridge 74, Valley Falls 46

The two-time defending state champs from Moundridge used an 8-0 in the second quarter and then a 9-0 to start the second half to pull away from Valley Falls and improve to 25-0 on the season.  The Wildcats shot 48 percent and had a +15 rebounding advantage including 15 offensive rebounds which led to a 15-0 advantage in second chance points. 

Damian Cervantez hit a trey to tie the score at 17 to start the second quarter and the Dragons had one possession down 21-20 but couldn't take the lead and Moundridge answered with eight straight points to go ahead 34-25 at halftime. The early stages of the third quarter were the back-breaker for Valley Falls and the Wildcats scored nine quick unanswered points and used a 14-1 run out of the locker room to take a resounding 48-26 lead and never look back. 

The Wildcats hit nine treys and only had four turnovers as they extended the longest winning streak in the state to 35 wins. Barrett  Moddelmog had 18 points while Heath Churchhill and Henry Hecox both added 15 and Jesse Lutz hit three triples off the bench to chip in nine points for the tall and athletic Wildcats led by seven seniors who helped create 20 points off turnovers. 

Collin Kearney had a monster first half and kept Valley Falls in the game with 12 first quarter points and 16 in the half before finishing with a game high 20 points including three triples and 5 of 6 at the foul line to earn Bank of Atchison "Player of the Game" honors. Trenten VanHoutan added 11 points and Cervantez had seven while Hayden Kearney chipped in 6.
