Hiawatha Girls Roll While Horton Boys Win in Overtime

Horton traveled to Hiawatha on Tuesday night for a non-league doubleheader with the Hiawatha girls winning game one while the Horton boys won the late game in overtime. 

GIRLS: Horton 47, Hiawatha 66

Horton (0-2) opened the game with a 18-9 lead after the first quarter but Hiawatha (1-1) would dominate the game the rest of the way. 

The Redhawks outscored the Chargers 26-5 in the second quarter and led the game by 12 at halftime. They would outscored the Chargers 31-24 in the second half. 

The Redhawks were led by Kylie Nelson and Alija Contreras. Nelson finished with 24 points while Contreras finished with 22 points. The two combined to hit nine three-pointers in the game. 

Horton was led by Marlysa Banks who finished with a game high 25 points while Carly Hutfles finished the game with 15 points. 

BOYS: Horton 67, Hiawatha 63 (OT)

This game was back and forth from the opening tip with the Chargers pulling out the win in overtime. 

Hiawatha (0-2) led 18-11 after the first quarter while Horton (2-0) outscored Hiawatha 21-9 in the second quarter to lead the game by five at halftime. 

The Redhawks would control the third quarter and would lead the game 44-40 going into the fourth quarter. 

The game stayed tight all throughout the fourth quarter with Hiawatha holding a slim lead until the final minute of regulation. 

Horton's Tayvion Kahbeah would hit a right corner three with under a minute left to give the Chargers a 58-57 lead. They would add a free throw to lead 59-57 but Hiawatha's Michael Jensen went coast-to-coast and converted a lay-up to tie the game with less than five seconds left. 

After a timeout, the Chargers got up an open three from just inside halfcourt that hit off the back iron and the game would go into overtime tied at 59. 

The teams would exchange buckets in the early portions of overtime but Horton's Luke McAfee hit some crucial free throws down the stretch to help the Chargers hold on for the win. 

McAfee led Horton with 22 points (20 in the second half) including five three-pointers. Dante Masqua finished with 15 points while Kahbeah finished with 14 points and Cooper Strube added 12 points. 

The Redhawks were led by Jensen's 22 points while Ethan Morton finished with 18 points and Cameron Boswell finished with 10 points.
