Nemaha Central Boys & Girls Take First at Sabetha Track Invite

The track season with only a few weeks remaining before Regionals continued on Thursday for several teams and many area athletes continued to put together strong performances and get better while competing at the Sabetha Invitational.

The Nemaha Central Thunder sounded in a big way at the Sabetha Invitational as both the girls and boys laid claim to the top team performances on the day winning by wide margins. In the boys competition the Thunder posted 128 points to take first beating out the competition by 42.5 as Marysville scored 85.5 points to take second place and Riverside rounded out the Top three boys team finishes. Auburn (NE), Sabetha and Falls City followed in the team standings finishing fourth, fifth and sixth, while Wetmore, Centralia and Hiawatha finished seventh, eighth and ninth. Horton and Kickapoo Nation finished out the team standings finishing 10th and 11th. 

In the girls action the lady Thunder scored 150 total points to take first and won by 53 points as 93 points by Auburn (NE) was good for second and the host Sabetha earned third place. Marysville, Centralia and Hiawatha grabbed fourth, fifth and sixth place team finishes, while Falls City, Riverside and Horton finished seventh, eighth and ninth. Kickapoo Nation and Wetmore tied for 10th place. 

Leading the way for Nemaha Central's strong day at the Sabetha Invitational was 12 event wins between the girls and boys. Jacob Koelzer continued to sprint and leap past the competition racking up three more gold medals on the year after winning the 100 and 200 meter dashes with times of 11.40 and 23.54 and placing first in the long jump with a leap of 20'9. He wasn't the only Thunder athlete to win multiple events as Kaley Dalinghaus continued to toss her way to top performances winning the shot put (42'0.50) and javelin (136'1). On the boys side of the competition the Thunder also took first in the 4x100 meter relay (45.09) and the Throwers relay (50.60), while Winston Meyer won the shot put (49'5) and Caleb Bradley took first in the pole vault (13'0). The lady Thunder raced to first in the 4x100 meter relay (52.28) and both Allison Rottinghaus and Rachael Baumgartner each won the triple jump (34'8.25) and pole vault (10'0), respectively. 

Auburn (NE) had the second most first place finishes on the day led by Meg Rieschick who won the 100 meter dash (13.08) and the long jump (16'3) for the Bulldogs. Nichole Sherman and Taylor Peterson also won events in the girls competition taking the gold in the 200 meter dash (27.90) and high jump (5'0), while the lady Bulldogs raced to first in the 4x400 meter relay (4:20.09). On the boys side of competition Tyler Werdt won the 800 meter run (2:07.15) and Jonathan Hannaford took first in the 110 meter hurdles (16.05) for Auburn. 

Both Riverside and Hiawatha had five event wins on the day at the Sabetha Invitational. For the Cyclones they all came in the boy’s competition with four of the five coming in the track events. Tre Wilkinson raced to the 400 meter dash (51.91) win, while Cole Hinton won the 1600 meter run (4:47.18) and Triston Hinton took the gold in the 3200 meter run (10:36.76). The Cyclone boys also posted a time of 3:42.07 to win the 4x400 meter relay, while Antonio Jones won the high jump behind a leap of 5'10. 

The Red Hawks of Hiawatha had four of their five event wins on the day come in the girl’s competition. Elizabeth Kettler posted times of 5:35.88 and 12:38.60 to win the 1600 and 3200 meter runs, while the lady Red Hawks also won gold in the 4x800 meter relay (10:14.29). Emily Gartner tossed her way to a first place finish in the discus with a toss of 131'9 and in the boys competition, Gavin Lierz won the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 40.63. 

Marysville snagged four event winners at the Sabetha Invitational as Claire Cudney and Avery Williams swept the girls hurdles winning the 100 and 300 meter hurdles with times of 15.92 and 48.92, respectively. In the boys action Chase Green tossed his way to the win in the javelin (175'6) and Adam Lindhorst won the discus (135'2). 

The host Sabetha Bluejays had three individual event wins on the day as the boys 4x800 meter relay (9:00.06) team took first, the girls Throwers relay team (1:01.51) earned first and Alexis McAfee raced to the gold in the 800 meter run (2:32.57). 

Both Wetmore and Centralia and one individual winner on the day as Curtis Bloom won the boys triple jump (39'6.50) for the Cardinals and Maegan Koch of Centralia won the girls 400 meter dash (1:01.20).
