Holton Wrestling Finishes 5th In Gerald Sadowski Memorial Tournament

Thirteen teams from across the state of Kansas traveled to Holton to partake in the annual Sadowski tournament Saturday, and expectations for the tournament were met and exceeded. Holton, Coached by Cullen Jackson, trotted out 10 wrestlers while leaving weight classes 106, 113, 120 and 182 "open" as no wrestlers were available due to illness and injury. Of the 10 wrestlers for the Wildcats, 5 placed in the top three and of those 5 Justin Rieschick was the only Wildcat to reign victorious and unblemished.

The number one seeded Rieschick went 2-0 on the day after receiving an opening round bye and won a thriller in his 145 pound title bout against Shawnee Heights' Jake Patterson by a 9-8 decision. While trailing 8-7 with :30 seconds left in the match, Rieschick grabbed the right leg of Patterson and twice attempted to get the much needed takedown with no success. Finally with :10 seconds left in the match, Rieschick still grasping the right leg of

Patterson, hopping towards the outer circle, got Patterson off balance and scored the two point take-down to win the match. When the final whistle blew Rieschick pumped his arms and clapped his hands, knowing he just wrestled and defeated one of the best in his weight class across the state of Kansas, handing Patterson his 2nd loss of the year.

Holton's Tyler Price (152 pounds) finished his day with a 2-1 record and his lone loss to champion Isaiah Luellen from Rossville by a 10-5 decision. Spencer Baum (160 pounds) finished his day similar to Price with a 2-1 record and his only loss in the championship bout against Andover Central's Dakota Rodd by pin 2:54 into the match. Kyler Tannahill joined Price and Baum with a second place finish on the day going 3-1 with his only loss coming against champion Brett Yeagley from Shawnee Heights by pin 1:11 into the match.

Tel Wittmer rounds out Holton's 5 top three placers from Saturday as he finished 3-1 on the day with his only loss coming to eventual champion Andrew Sprague from Gardner-Edgerton. Tel worked his way following that loss to Sprague through the consolation bracket where he met Onaga's Quentin Lara in the 3rd place match and defeated Lara by a 3-2 decision.

Holton finished 5th overall in team points behind Shawnee Heights(190.5), Andover Central (178.5), Gardner-Edgerton (167.0) and Rossville (165.5) with 124.5 points of their own. Also helping the 'Cats reach 5th overall were Lawson Henry (132 pound 1-3, 6th), Jayger Carson (138 pound 3-2, 5th), Jameson Lutz (170 pound 2-2, 4th) and Clay Baumgartner (285 pound 0-3, 6th).

Onaga had a pair of grapplers compete on the mats as Quentin Lara earned fourth place at 220lbs with a 1-2 record on the day and Trenton Ross who posted a 2-1 mark took second at 132lbs. While for Oskaloosa Ben Harvey and Jared Miller competed and placed third and fifth at 182lb and 160lbs, respectively with records of 3-1 and 2-2 on the day. 

Cullen Jackson will deploy his grapplers next Thursday for a meet in Hoyt at Royal Valley, while Onaga will hit the mat next Thursday at the Wabaunsee double dual and Oskaloosa will be on the mats again on Saturday at the Atchison Invitational.
