Several Area Schools Compete at Rossville Wrestling Tournament

Several area teams traveled to Rossville on Saturday to get the wrestling rolling again on Saturday and many individual top performances where posted by area teams. 

Sixteen teams competed on the day and with the best area team performance, Sabetha finished seventh, while Perry Lecompton took ninth, Donpihan West rounded out the Top 10 of the team finishes. Pleasant Ridge/Immaculata took 11th, ACCHS placed 12th, Maur Hill finished 14th and Hiawatha 15th as teams. 

A pair of second place finishes led the Sabetha Bluejays on Saturday as both Vernon Nellis (113lbs) and Seth Harrell (126lbs) each brought home silver medals. Nellis put together a 2-1 day on the mats with a pair of pinfall wins in 31 seconds and 3:57, while Harrell also went 2-1 in action with a pinfall win in 1:51 and a 6-2 decision win. It was a fourth place finish for Cauy Rokey (170lbs) as he posted a 3-2 record on the mats at the Rossville Invitational Brandon Brownlee (132lbs), Nate Neihues (145lbs) and Payton Strahm (195lbs) each registered fifth place finishes for the Bluejays, while Kamden Brownlee (152lbs) earned a sixth place finish. 

Going 3-0 on the mats led Wyatt Pringle to the individual title at 113lbs at the Rossville Invitational as he picked up three pinfall wins in 53 seconds, 1:20 and 1:53 to lead Perry Lecompton on the day. Both Torin Van nest (160lbs) and Kyle Bonham (285lbs) earned fifth place finishes, while Dalton Kahle(106lbs) placed sixth in his weight class for the Kaws. 

Two second place finishes and a third place led the Doniphan West Mustangs at the Rossville Invitational. Garret Dunlap (160lbs) continued his strong season but suffered his first loss of the year finishing 3-1 to take second, picking up a pair of pinfall wins in 1:29 and 1:35, while also grabbing a 9-3 decision win. Second place was also earned by Zeb Speer who finished 2-1 in action, earning his two wins by pin in 55 seconds and 1:55. Kody Collins (182lbs) grabbed the third place finish for Doniphan West going 3-1 with a technical fall win, 9-5 decision victory and pinfall win in 1:27. 

Four of the five grapplers for Pleasant Ridge/Immaculata on the day picked up a sixth place or better finish on the mats at the Rossville Invitational. They were led by a second place finish from Dustin Graham (195lbs) who took second place with a 2-1 record on the day, registering his two wins by pin in 2:30 and 2:54. Trevor Ragland (106lbs) also went 2-1 on the day with a pair of pinfall wins in 32 seconds and 2:00 and earned third place with that performance, while it was a fourth place finish for Devon Dorr (120lbs) after going 3-2 on the mats. Nick Bridges (160lbs) brought home a sixth place finish for Pleasant Ridge/Immaculata.

For the ACCHS Tigers five wrestlers registered Top six finishes on the mats at the Rossville Invitational led by a second place showing from Hunter Ostertag (132lbs) who was 2-1 on the day with a 5-2 decision win and a pinfall win in 59 seconds. Ryan Hanshaw (285lbs) picked up a fourth place finish for the Tigers, while Karl Scholz (120lbs) took home fifth place and both Hunter Evans (138lbs) and Makaea Forbes (195lbs) each registered sixth place finishes. 

Maur Hill had a pair of Top six finishes as Conner Wilson (138lbs) took fifth place for the Ravens and Benedict Humberg (145lbs) earned sixth place. 

Hiawatha was led by a fourth place finish by Keenan Hinton (220lbs) who grabbed a fourth place finish with a 2-2 record on the day.
