Jeff West and Onaga Wrestlers Compete at Herington Invitational

The holiday break has come and gone and the high school wrestling season is back rolling with a full slate of tournaments on Saturday and both Jeff West and Onaga hit the mats at the Herington Invitational. The Tigers took seventh place as a team out of 14 teams competing on the day, while Onaga finished 11th as a team. 

Leading the performances on the day for the Jeff West Tigers was a trio of third place finishes, while three more Tiger grapplers finished with fourth places, a fifth place finish, two sixth places were earned and a tenth place finish also. Nich Reeb (160lbs), Austin Michaelis (113lbs) and Shane Kelly (106lbs) all grabbed bronze medals for Jeff West on the mats. Reeb had a 4-1 day on the mats including a pair of pinfall wins, while Michaelis went 3-2 with two pinfall wins and Kelly also got third place but went 0-2 on the mats. Luke Holloman (120lbs), Kody Gibson (126lbs) and Brandan Callahan (132lbs) all picked up fourth place finishes after each winning two matches apiece at the Herington Invitational. A fifth place finish was earned by Chase Montgomery (170lbs), while both Caden Hansen (138lbs) and Mason Heiden (152lbs) picked up sixth place finishes. Montgomery posted a 3-2 record on the day, while both Hansen and Heiden won a pair of matches, while Tyler Casto (145lbs) also won a pair of matches and grabbed a 10th place finish. 

Onaga Buffalos were led at the Herington Invitational by a second and third place individual finishes. Quentin Lara (220lbs) and Garrett Ames (170lbs) notched the second and third place finishes, respectively as Lara and Ames both were 4-1. Lara registered three pinfall wins in 55 seconds, 5:33 and 1:29, while also winning a match by a 4-2 decision, but fell in the Championship bout falling by a 6-0 decision. Ames picked up a pair of pinfall wins in 43 seconds and 1:47, while also winning by 13-0 major decision and after a loss in the Semifinals, Ames responded to finish the day with a 3-2 decision win to take third. Eli Zidek (285lbs) and Brandon Merriman (138lbs) both picked up seventh place finishes for Onaga each winning a pair of matches, while Lara Brannan-Cole (132lbs) took 10th and Kylar Schmidt (160lbs) placed 12th. 

Both teams will hit the mats again next Saturday, January 16th as Onaga will compete at the Marysville Invitational, while Jeff West will compete at the St. Mary's Invitational which start on Friday, January 15th and continues to the 16th.
