Hiawatha Girls and Boys Win Big Over ACCHS
By Jonny Kane

Entering Friday night, the ACCHS Lady Tigers had the game plan of not letting Hiawatha senior Emily Gartner beat them like she had the past several years.

After the strategy initially worked, Gartner found her groove to score a game-high 17 points and lead the Lady Redhawks to a 52-22 win in Effingham.

Both teams struggled early on offense, as they combined to score just nine points with Hiawatha holding a 7-2 advantage after the opening quarter.

The Lady Redhawk offense came alive in the second to score 18 points, and Hiawatha saw their lead balloon to 14 at the break.

ACCHS had chances to creep back into the game out of the break, but Hiawatha held the Lady Tigers to just eight points to put the game away.

Hiawatha (4-2) hosts Holton (4-3, 4-2) in a key Big 7 contest Tuesday. ACCHS (1-6, 0-6) travels to Riverside (0-7).

Hiawatha: Emily Gartner – 17, Crystal Barbary – 13, Cariann Kunkel – 8, Kendra Overdick – 7, Molly Kettler – 5, Jada Rosa – 1, Elizabeth Kettler – 1.

ACCHS: Mallory Eckert – 7, Jentry Scherer – 4, Madison Martin – 4, Karlie Parnell – 3, Katie Bein – 2, Lucy Kearney – 2.

BOYS

The Hiawatha boys entered their matchup with ACCHS riding high after picking up their first win of the season Tuesday night, 46-31, over Perry Lecompton.

Friday night, the Redhawks continued their strong play as they picked up win number two with a 47-31 victory over the Tigers.

Hiawatha jumped out early clicking on all cylinders to lead 16-6 after the first quarter. ACCHS battled back in the second behind six points from senior Trevor Smith, but the Redhawks still took a 27-19 lead into halftime.

The third quarter was much like the first for the Tigers scoring just seven points, and Hiawatha took advantage by expanding the lead back to double digits, which they held the rest of the way.

Hiawatha (2-4) heads home for a matchup with Holton (2-5, 2-4) Tuesday. ACCHS (0-7, 0-6) hits the road for another Big 7 League contest against Riverside (4-3).
