Playing for pride and a building block for next year both the Onaga Buffaloes and Valley Falls came into week eight the high school football season experiencing a tough season full of tough times. At the end of the night on Friday it was Onaga breaking through for their first win of the season topping the Dragons 30-2.

Valley Falls received the opening kickoff and proceed to string a drive together with the rushing attack but before getting the redzone the Dragons coughed up the ball with a fumble and Onaga recovered. The Buffaloes took that turnover and turned it into the first points of the game as Garrett Ames hit pay dirt from four-yards out and with the two-point conversion made it 8-0 Onaga with 2:39 left in the first quarter.

Onaga repayed the favor in the first half to Valley Falls in the turnover category with a fumble also but the Dragons were able to capitalize and then later in the second quarter the Dragons pinned Onaga deep in their own territory forcing a punt in their own endzone that ended badly for the Buffaloes. The snap on the punt was high and shot out the back of the endzone for a safety making it 8-2 with 1:34 left before halftime. The Dragons received the free kick and got into Onaga territory on the return and on a 13-yard pass play got to the two-yard with just over 10 seconds remaining in the first half. A quarterback sneak by Chris Yates was stacked up at the line of scrimmage and Valley Falls hurried to the line for one final play in the first half but Onaga stuff Yates' attempt again to get in to the endzone and headed into halftime it was 8-2 Onaga leading.

Coming out of the half Onaga took the kickoff and marched down the field and with a 41-yard burst Tanner Marten found the endzone and it was 16-2 Buffaloes with 9:41 remaining in the third quarter. Two more scores would come in the second half for Onaga as Ames fond the endzone two more times, while the Onaga defense was stout and stingy stopping the Dragons right and left. The Buffaloes did have two more turnovers in the second half (two fumbles) and Valley Falls one more (interception) but Onaga capitalize on their opportunities better in the contest.

The loss sends Valley Falls to 1-7 on the season and the Dragons registered only 149 total yards of offense in the contest with 42 yards on 17 carries by Yates leading the way.

Onaga broke through with their first win of the season to move to 1-7 on the year and were led by 320 yards rushing in the contest including 178 yards on 23 carries for Marten with a touchdown and Ames added 74 yards on 18 carries with three touchdowns. The duo earned co-Community National Bank "Player to Bank On" honors on KMZA. Trenton Ross added 61 yards on nine carries in the win.

The season wraps next Thursday, October 29th for both teams as Valley Falls will host Wabaunsee and Onaga will host Maranatha.
