Ravens Escape Against Christ Prep
By Jonny Kane

With just 28 second left in the opening quarter, MH-MA junior runningback Nick Caudle received a punt, went along the right side, and took the football to the 44 yard line.

What seemed like a normal play in the game turned to be a big one as Caudle suffered a knee injury on the play, causing him to leave the game for good.

Enter sophomore Matthew Schrick.

Schrick came in and picked up right where Caudle left off catching two touchdown passes as Maur Hill Mount Academy escaped on homecoming Friday night with a 22-19 win over Christ Prep Academy.

The Ravens started out strong finding the end zone on their first possession of the game as senior quarterback David Olberding found Caudle for a 23-yard touchdown. Arthur Rocha tacked on the extra point and MH-MA led 7-0 with 7:53 left in the first quarter.

After forcing a punt, the MH-MA offense put together another drive and threatened inside of the Patriot 10 yard line. But, the Ravens turned the football over on a fumble giving Christ Prep the ball inside of their own two yard line.

After a false start penalty the ball was placed at the one yard line, and on the next play Raven junior defensive end Luke Ervin tackled Patriot senior Tanner Metzdorf in the end zone for a safety.

The Ravens tacked on one more score late in the first half as Olberding connected with Schrick from 29 yards out to give MH-MA a 15-0 lead heading into halftime.

Coming out of the break the Patriots decided to make the switch at quarterback from junior TJ Carver to the junior Metzdorf and the switch payed off.

Metzdorf orchestrated two straight scoring drives for the Patriots out of the half as they pulled within three at 15-12 with 8:37 left in the contest.

At this point the Ravens were in trouble, but Olberding responded once again for the Ravens connecting with Schrick for the second time, this time from 62 yards out, to give MH-MA a 22-12 lead with 5:42 left in the game.

The Patriots then needed a quick score to have a chance and Metzdorf delivered with a 56-yard touchdown rush on the second play from scrimmage after the Raven score and it was back to a three point game with 5:18 left.

All the Ravens had to do was pick up a couple of first downs to the ice the game and they did just that to pick up the homecoming victory.

MH-MA dealt with several penalties all night long that cost senior running back Harry Trotter two touchdowns, but he still led the Ravens on the ground compiling 30 carries for 162 yards. Olberding finished 10-for-12 through the air for 179 yards, three touchdowns, while Schrick hauled in six passes for 136 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Maur Hill Mount Academy (3-1, 2-0 NEKL) hosts Horton next Friday, while Christ Prep (2-3) is at Jefferson County North.
