Six of the seven Northeast Kansas League legion baseball teams were in action on Wednesday night with a pair of League double headers and two NEKL teams in non-league action. 

Seneca and Oskaloosa each earned a sweep in League action as Seneca topped Sabetha 8-0 (five innings) and 8-4 and Oskaloosa won 9-8 and 3-1 over Atchison. Doniphan County and Hiawatha was in action in non-league play and both on the road as Doniphan County picked up a sweep of Silver Lake 6-4 in 10 innings and 5-1, while Hiawatha was swept by Falls City (NE) 8-0 (five innings) and 2-0.

Seneca Earns Pair of League Wins over Sabetha

Seneca made the best of the offensive opportunities they had and got strong pitching on Wednesday against Sabetha earning the double header sweep with 8-0 (five innings) and 8-4 wins.

Seneca got on the board in the bottom of the second inning to take the lead in game one as Kurtis Niehues led the inning off with a double and a RBI groundout by Justice McKernan brought him home later in the inning. Niehues blasted a two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth to make it a 3-0, after Sabetha threatened in the top of the third, leaving the bases loaded after three walks in the inning. Seneca closed out the game in the bottom of the fifth with five runs on two-hits, two walks and two Sabetha errors as a RBI single by McKernan finished out the scoring for the 8-0 win.

Dustin Rottinghaus was dialed in on the mound earning the win going all five innings, pitching a complete game no-hit shut out, issuing five walks in the game while striking out 11. Offensively Niehues led Seneca with a 2-3 game with a two-run homer, double, two RBI and two runs scored, earning McDonald's "Player of the Game" on KMZA radio.

Sabetha only had five base runners all getting on via walks in the matchup, while Anthony Martin took the loss on the mound after pitching four and a third giving up seven runs on four hits, five walks and struck out three.

Game two saw Seneca take advantage of an early Sabetha error to lead 1-0 after the first inning as Alex Rottinghaus after reaching on an error and advancing all the way to third came in on an RBI sacrifice fly by Dalton Hiltbrand. Seneca took control of the game in the bottom of the third capitalizing on three Sabetha errors and putting two hits and a walk with that to score five runs and lead 7-0. Sabetha answered with a four-run top of the fourth scoring all four runs without a hit as they had four walks, a Seneca error, fielder's choice and RBI groundout in the inning. Seneca added an insurance run in the bottom of the fourth and closed the door in the fifth inning for the 8-4 win.

Devin Henry earned the win going four innings giving up four runs on three hits, six walks and seven strikeouts, while Hiltbrand pitched the fifth inning to secure the win. Seneca had only five hits in the game, while Sabetha only had four hits and Alec Kirwan took the loss on the mound giving up eight runs on five hits, a walk, hit batter and struck out three.

With the wins Seneca improves to 5-1 on the season, while Sabetha fell to 2-10 on the year with the losses.

Oskaloosa Sweeps Atchison in Pair of Close League Games

Oskaloosa remained unbeaten in NEKL play as they swept Atchison on Wednesday in double header on their home diamond winning 9-8 and 3-1.

Game one was a tight contest down to the wire as Oskaloosa won in walk-off fashion as Mitchell Sullivan drew a walk-off walk in the bottom of the seventh to bring in the winning run giving Oskaloosa the 9-8 win. In game two the pitching of Dalton VanHoutan who pitched all five innings fanning six lifted Oskaloosa to the 3-1 win.

With the sweep Oskaloosa improved to 4-1 overall on the season (4-0 in NEKL), while Atchison fell to 3-3 on the season.

Doniphan County Wins Pair of Road Non-League Contests Against Silver Lake

It was a tale of two games for Doniphan County on what proved to be a late Wednesday night as Doniphan County won 6-4 in 10 innings and 5-1 for the twin bill sweep at Silver Lake.

Game one proved to be a thriller as Doniphan County threw out the winning run for Silver Lake twice in extra's getting outs at home in the bottom of the eighth and ninth, before breaking the tie in the top of the tenth. Chris Winkel drew a walk and with an RBI double from Nathan Gaarder Doniphan County took the lead and a RBI sacrifice fly later in the inning by Phoenix Keller scored Gaarder making it a 6-4 Doniphan County lead. In the bottom of the tenth Gaarder came in for the save and struck out the side to give Doniphan County the 6-4, 10 innings win.

Keller earned the win on the mound in an inning and one-third of relief for Caleb Winkel who started the game and went solid four and two-thirds. Offensively, Reid Greaser was 3-5 with a home run, while Gaarder, Tucker Morris and Caleb Winkel all finished with three hits, also as Doniphan County had 14 hits, but did strand 16 in the game.

Game two was controlled by Doniphan County as Nathan Gaarder threw a complete game two-hitter with 12 strikeouts and only one walk, helping Doniphan County earn the 5-1 win. Caleb Winkel posted another three hit game going 3-3, while Luke Smith had a single with two RBI's and Keller chipped in a pair of RBI's.

With the two wins Doniphan County improve to 6-1 on the season and have won six games in a row.

Hiawatha Struggles on the Road Falling to Falls City in Double Header

It was an offensive struggle for Hiawatha as they only managed seven hits on the night, falling to Falls City (NE) on the road 8-0 (five innings) and 2-0 in a double header.

Falls City out-hit Hiawatha seven to three in game one and made the best of those seven hits, scoring two-runs in the second and third innings, while plating three in the third and finishing the game in the bottom of the fifth with one more run, to take the 8-0 win in five. Game two saw Ryker Smith pitch a solid three innings but Falls City scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning and they made those stand up as they held Hiawatha to four hits and earned the 2-0 win.

The pair of losses to Falls City (NE) on the road sends Hiawatha to 1-5 on the season.
