The only Northeast Kansas League legion baseball action on Wednesday was a West Division doubleheader as Corning hosted Sabetha and the teams played to a split. Sabetha claimed game one 12-4 in six innings and Corning snagged game two 9-8.
Game one saw Sabetha open the scoring tallying three runs in the first inning on two hits, a pair of walks and an error. Josh Hasenkamp of Corning cut the lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the second on a solo home run, but Braden Argabright of Sabetha answered by clubbing a solo homer of his own in the top of the third inning. Sabetha increased the lead to 6-1 in the top of the fourth on consecutive doubles by Joe Gruber and Kyle Grimm, while Ryan Stapleton followed with an RBI single. In the bottom of the inning, Hasenkamp blasted a three-run homer to cut the lead to 6-4 for Sabetha. Once more Sabetha answered scoring four runs in the fifth and a pair of runs in the sixth to secure the 12-4 game one win.
Seth Burdick and Mason Spellmeier each delivered two-run singles in the fifth, while Blake Frey led Sabetha on the night with three hits and two runs scored. Frey also pitched tossing five innings allowing only five hits for the win. Quinn Buessing tossed five innings in the loss for Corning, while offensively Hasenkamp tallied four RBI's behind his two home runs.
Just like game one Sabetha jumped up early leading 3-0 in the first inning but Corning erased a 3-0 hole by plating seven runs in the bottom of the second with only one run being earned. The inning opened with a Sabetha error followed by four consecutive walks making it 3-2. After an RBI ground out tied the score, Corning was able to score a run on a balk and three consecutive singles and another error on the second single. Sabetha came right back and was able to cut the lead to one at 7-6 on a hit batter and two-run single by Mason Spellmeier in the top of the third. Corning added a pair of runs in the fourth when Sabetha fielders lost a pair of flies in the night to start the inning. Sabetha appeared to wiggle their way out of a bases loaded no-out situation by recording a strikeout and force out at the plate, but Quinn Buessing was able to deliver a clutch two-out, two-run single which proved to be the difference. After a Kamden Brownlee two-out, two-run home run cut the lead to 9-8 in the top of the 5th, Sabetha had the tying run on second when Corning ended the game ended by recording a strikeout to snag the 9-8 win.
Kamble Haverkamp and Trenton Flentie combined for the win on the mound for Corning, while Evan Slater notched a pair of hits in the contest. Argabright led Sabetha in the loss with two hits.
The split on the night pushes Sabetha to 19-6 on the season, while Corning moved to 3-11 on the year.
