Marysville, Immaculata, Hiawatha & Atchison Compete at Immaculata Boys Tennis Invite

Four area boy’s tennis teams hit the courts on Tuesday and competed along with four other teams at the Immaculata Raider Invitational.

Marysville nabbed the best finish of the four area teams finishing second place out of the eight teams competing, while KC Christian took home the tournament title. Host Immaculata brought home a fourth place finish, as Bishop Seabury took third place as a team. The rest of the team standings saw Maranatha take fifth, Neodesha place sixth, Hiawatha grab seventh place and Atchison take eighth as a team.

A pair of second place doubles finishes by Marysville Bulldogs paced them to a second place team finish, as the tandems of Zach Pieschl and Tommy McNish and Dustin Faulkner and Jacob Drey each earned second in doubles action. Pieschl and McNish won the Doubles #1 competition Pool A going 3-0 beating Immaculata 8-1, Atchison 8-0 and Maranatha 8-0, making the first place match. In the first place match the Bulldog tandem faced KC Christian and fell 8-0 to take second place. Just like their teammates, Faulkner and Drey went 3-0 in pool play in Doubles #2 action to make the first place match. Faulkner and Drey beat Atchison 8-1 and both Immaculata and Maranatha 8-0, before falling to KC Christin 8-3 in the first place match. In singles competition, Jack Blumer paced the Bulldogs finishing third in Singles #1, going 2-1 in pool play with wins over Immaculata (8-5) and Atchison (8-3), but a loss to Maranatha (8-2). In the third place match Blumer picked up the win over Bishop Seabury, winning 8-0. Hayden Crist also competed for Marysville going 1-3 in Singles #2 action finishing sixth.

Two third place finishes highlighted the day for the host of the tournament as the Immaculata Raiders had a third place finish in the Singles #2 and Doubles #1 competition. In singles action, Sam Rhee posted a 2-1 record in pool play beating Atchison 8-0 and Marysville 8-4, while falling to Maranatha 8-4 to make the third place match were he posted a 8-2 win over KC Christian. The team of Adam Habib and Hunter Patten partnered to take third in Doubles #1 action, going 2-1 in pool play with wins over Atchison (8-3) and Maranatha (8-2), but a loss to Marysville (8-1) and capped the day with a 8-3 win over Hiawatha for third place. Ben Lee took fifth in Singles #1 action, while the team of Andrew Jones and Michael Hollingsworth also took fifth coming in Doubles #2, as both Lee and the team of Jones and Hollingsworth each went 2-2 on the court.

A fourth place finish by Ryan Shamburg and Kyle Tollefson in Doubles #1 action highlighted the tournament for the Hiawatha Red Hawks as the guys went just 1-2 in pool play but via tie-breaker made the third place match. Shamburg and Tollefson picked up their win against Neodesha 8-2, but took an 8-6 loss to Bishop Seabury and an 8-0 loss to KC Christian and fell 8-3 to Immaculata for third place. In Doubles #2 the team of Rhodes Brook and Dillon Thompson placed seventh for Hiawatha going 1-3 with their win coming against Atchison 8-3 in the seventh place game. In singles action, Joseph Kunkel and Brandon Hurn placed sixth and eighth, respectively in Singles #1 and #2. Kunkel went 1-3 with his lone win coming in pool play against Neodesha 8-1, while Hurn finished the day 0-4.

For Atchison it was two seventh place finishes in singles action and a pair of eighth place finishes in doubles action. Austin Grippin and Jack McCoole both posted 1-3 records in Singles #1 and #2 action, respectively to place seventh with wins coming in the seventh place matches versus Neodesha (8-0) and Hiawatha (8-4), respectively. The teams of Nathan Dykstra and Nash Shults and the duo of Benton Anderson and Jeremy Gray competed in Doubles #1 and #2 action, respectively for Atchison both finishing 0-4 on the day.
