Five Area Schools Compete at Holton Track Invite to Open Season

The track season opened for five area schools at the Holton Invitational as the Wildcats hosted Hiawatha, Jackson Heights, Atchison and Valley Falls, along with Abilene also on Tuesday.

It was the Abilene Cowboys roping in a first place team performance in the boys and girls competition on the day, winning by 116 and 23 points, respectively. Abilene boys posted 203 points to claim first place, while Hiawatha finished second with 87 points and Holton was just one-point behind the Red Hawks taking third place. Atchison, Jackson Heights and Valley Falls finished fourth, fifth and sixth finishing out the boy’s team performances. On the girl’s side of the competition Abilene took first with 143 points, while Atchison finished second with 118 points and Holton finished third with 101 total points. Hiawatha, Jackson Heights and Valley Falls finished fourth, fifth and sixth finishing out the girl’s team performances.

The Atchison Redmen came home with the most first place medals from the area teams with seven event wins between the girls and boys competition. Leading the charge was Sarah Jaloma who ran her way to wins in both the 1600m run and 3200m run's posting times of 5:48.14 and 12:32. The Lady Red also brought home first in the 4x400m Relay as Arhianna Franklin, Kate McCoole, Talia Rawls and Emily Jaloma all registered a time of 4:30.39 to claim first. Rawls also brought home gold in the 200m dash notching a time of 27.52, while Jaihlyn Bratton won the 400m dash with a time of 1:03.62 and also took second in the 200m dash. In the boys competition for Atchison it was Justin Whitmer and Matt Sowers bringing home the gold as Whitmer won the 800m run with a time of 2:06.61 and Sowers posted a time of 11:09.65 to win the 3200m run.

Sarah and Emily Jaloma partnered with McCoole and Teagan Hanson to place second in the 4x800m Relay, while Imogene Bratton, Franklin, Peyton Welch and Anna Shipley all raced to a second place finish the 4x100m Relay for Atchison. Imogene Bratton, Shipley and Emily Jaloma all picked up an individual Top three finish on the day as Bratton placed third in the 100m dash, Shipley grabbed second place in the pole vault and Jaloma finished second in the high jump. Hailey Macierowski also picked up a Top three finish with a second place finish in the 3200m run. While in the boys competition Jerel Rawls took home second in both the 200m and 400m dash and placed third in the triple jump. Seth Heckle also brought home three medals, finishing second in the 110m hurdles and third in the 300m hurdles and long jump.

Six first place finishes were picked up by the Hiawatha Red Hawks as Brendan Steele and Emily Gartner highlighted the day with two gold medals apiece. Steele leapt his way to a win in the long jump behind a leap of 20'00.50 and tossed his way to the win in the javelin with a throw of 145'09, while Gartner tossed her way to wins in the shot put and discus with tosses of 35'04 and 118'10. Molly Kettler also earned a pair of first place finishes winning the 800m run with a time of 2:35.91, while partnering up with Aly Shamburg, Courtney Brockhoff and Emma Williams to win the 4x800m Relay with a time of 10:44.08. That same quartet also took second place in the 4x400m Relay.

Shamburg also picked up a second place finish in the 3200m run and placed third in the 1600m run, while Jolyn Grant took the silver in the javelin in the girl’s competition. On the boys side Brandt Houk ran to a second place finish in the 3200m run and third place in the 1600m run, while teamming up with Ryker Smith, Jesse Quinn and Steele for second place in the 4x800m Relay. Quinn and Smith both also picked up a third place finish in the 3200m and 800m run's, respectively, while Gain Lierz finished second in the 300m hurdles and third in the 300m hurdles.

For the host Holton Wildcats five first place finishes were picked up with 18 Top three performances. Kimmie Snepp sprinted to the gold in the 100m dash with a time of 12.87, while racing with Ashley Cook, Tyler Prine and Ashlyn Weilert in the 4x100m Relay and taking first with a time of 52.84. Holly Karn picked up two first place finishes racing to the win in the 100m hurdles behind a time of 16.43, while also winning the 300m hurdles with a time of 51.21. Indie Allen was the only Holton boy’s competitor to win an event as he posted a leap of 43'08 to win the triple jump, while also finishing second in the long jump.

Prine and Cook who were part of the 4x100m Relay gold medal team and also picked up second place performances. Prine finished second in the 100m hurdles, while Cook placed second in both the 100m dash and 200m dash. Alex Meyers brought home two medals finishing second in the 300m hurdles and third in the 300m hurdles, while Courtney Boswell placed third in the 300m hurdles. In the boys competition three more second finishes and three third place finishes were earned by Holton Wildcats. Miles McClintock-Strozier sprinted to a second place finish in the 100m dash, while Mason Strader took second in the 1600m run and the quartet of Allen, Mason Barta, Will Wright and McClintock-Strozier placed second in the 4x100m relay. Wright also finished third in the 400m dash and Spencer Baum took third in the 200m dash, while Baum, Barta, Tristan Parks and Wright finished third in the 4x400m relay.

Reid Bunde and Tamara Drinkard highlighted the action for Valley Falls as they grabbed the Dragons lone first place finishes at the Holton Invitational winning the boys shot put with a toss of 44'04 and the girl’s high jump with a leap of 4'10.25, while Bunde also took third in the discus. Dallas Clift placed second in the discus for the Dragons, while in the girl’s competition Becca Gibson took second in the shot put and Rachel Frakes placed third in the 800m run.

Jackson Heights was highlighted by 11 Top three performances at the Holton Invitational. Katilynn Little registered a pair of second place performances finishing with the silver medal in the 800m and 1600m run's, while Kay Andrews brought home a silver medal in the javelin. Abby Williams also finished with a second place performance, hers coming in the long jump, while also taking third in the high jump and Leix Proffitt finished third in the 400m dash. For the boys Seth Holliday and Wyatt Roles each finished second in the 800m run and shot put, respectively, while the quartet of Mason Hamilton, Wyatt Olberding, Westin Jacobsen and Holliday placed second in the 4x400m relay. Jacobsen and Hamilton also teamed with Korby Strube and Peter Rupnicki took place third in the 4x100m relay, while Jason Parker took third for the Cobras in the high jump.
