Jeff West Girls Push Top Ranked Hugoton to the Limit at 4A D2

The # 8 seed Jeff West Lady Tigers were heavy underdogs with an 11-11 record and making only their second state basketball tournament (other in 2003) with two seniors on the roster and facing the top ranked team in the state that had been to state the year prior and was 19-2 with an average win margin of 31 points per game.  Yet, Jeff West played their hearts out and was never out of the game till the final minute in Park City.

Jeff West led 5-0 to start the game, but a 17-2 run by Hugoton made it 17-7 early in the second quarter. Facing their largest deficit of 23-12, the Lady Tigers went on a 12-1 run to tie the game at 24 and was down only 31-27 at halftime.  Jeff West stayed within 39-36 entering the fourth quarter and got five straight points from Faith Becker to make it 47-45 with four minutes remaining.  Hugoton relies on their full court pressure and intense defensive pressure, and they forced a 22nd Jeff West turnovers and got a layup by Estafani Armendariz with one minute left to go ahead 52-45.  The Lady Eagles knocked down three big treys in the final quarter to help prevent the upset and improve to 20-2 on the season as sophomores, Kathryn Heger and Amy Scott scored 16 and 15 points respectively to lead the way.  

Jeff West got 11 points from Becker while freshman, Alyssa Garza and Mariah Murdie each had 9 huge points and the Tigers had 8 players score. Senior leader, Olivia Brees picked up a third foul at the end of the first quarter and was held to just four points as Jeff West ended their season with a 11-12 record.
