Jeff West Sweeps ACCHS in Battle of the Tigers
By Jonny Kane

The Jeff West Tigers came into Effingham, Kansas for Big 7 league action with ACCHS on Friday night and the Jeff West girls avenged a December 19th loss, while the Jeff West boys led wire-to-wire in the nightcap.

Girls: Jeff West 41, ACCHS 37

It was a very slow start for both teams as each side struggled to find the bottom of the net, but a couple of late first quarter buckets for Jeff West gave them a 10-5 lead after one. Jeff West then came out in the second frame and went on a 9-4 run, but ACCHS answered with a 6-0 run of their own to make the score 19-15 heading into the half.

The second half started just as the first ended with ACCHS starting the third quarter on a 4-0 run to tie things back up at 19. Both teams then traded baskets the rest of the third quarter giving the crowd in Effingham a tie ballgame at 28 heading into the final frame. ACCHS came out in the fourth quarter and gave themselves plenty of chances to come away with a win, but a 1-6 effort from the charity stripe down the stretch ultimately allowed Jeff West to come away with the four point win.

ACCHS has now lost three in a row dropping them into the fourth spot in the Big 7 with a 7-5 league record, while Jeff West moves just a game and a half back of fourth at 6-7. In the loss, ACCHS went just 2 for 14 from the free throw line, while Jeff West finished 8 of 12. Olivia Brees led all scorers as the senior finished right on her average of 17 points for Jeff West in the win. ACCHS was led in scoring by Rachel Newquist  for the second straight game as she had 11 points, but finishing just 1 of 7 from the line in the loss.

Boys: Jeff West 57, ACCHS 21

The boys contest was all Jeff West from the start as they started the game on a 17-2 run to take a 20-5 lead after the first quarter. ACCHS then looked much better in the second, but Jeff West still won the quarter 16-12 to give them a 36-17 lead heading into the locker room. Jeff West then came out the break and won the third quarter 8-2 to increase their lead to 25 points heading into the final frame and increasing it to 30 en route to the 57-21 win.

The Jeff West Tiger got 18 points from Jacob Dickey on all two point baskets in the win as they moved to 7-10 overall and 7-6 in the Big 7. ACCHS only had three players find the scoring column as they are still searching for that all allusive first win in Big 7 league play.
