Washington County Tigers Claim 2A State Volleyball Title

For the second time in the last three years the Washington County Tigers have claimed the top spot in Class 2A, winning the State title.

The Tigers missed out on the State tournament last year, but this year went into the State tournament earning the number three seed with a 34-4 record and ended with a perfect 5-0 mark at Emporia to earn the State title.

To open up pool play the Tigers took on the six seed, Meade and picked up the straight set win, 2515, 25-22 to start pool play 1-0. Washington County continued to roll in pool play action as the Tigers downed St. Mary's Colgan in straight sets, 25-18, 25-14 and then capped off pool play by beating Spearville in straight sets, 25-18, 25-13. With the 3-0 pool play record the Tigers won their pool and advanced to the Semifinals in the Class 2A state competition.

In the Semifinals the Tigers took on the runner-up on the other pool, who was Claflin-Central Plains. The Tigers had their toughest test at State in the Semifinals needing three sets to claim the win. Washington County fell in set one, but one set two and three to claim the win 20-25, 25-22, 25-23.

Moving on into the Championship game the Tigers were on the verge on claiming the State title for the sixth time in school history and did so by topping Wabaunsee in straight sets 25-23, 26-24.
