It was one interesting way to open Zone tournament play at Somerset Park in Sabetha on Monday night as it was two compelling games for many reasons. Seneca started the Zone tournament action by holding off Marysville for a 4-3 win and Sabetha despite only two-hits took home the 12-6 win over Hiawatha.

The night opened up with Seneca notching the one-run win over Marysville 4-3, as Seneca took the early lead and never trailed. Behind four two-out hits, including RBI singles by Andrew Oller and Tim Nolte in the bottom of the first inning Seneca plated three early runs and lead 3-0 just after one inning. Marysville finally broke through for themselves in the third using two walks and pair of singles to put a tally on the board and then used two Seneca errors in the top of the fourth to make it a 3-2 game.

Looking for an insurance run, Oller doubled to lead-off the bottom of the fifth for Seneca and came around to score in the inning making it 4-2. Headed to the top of the seventh inning leading by two Seneca looked to close the door and earn the win but Marysville started the inning with a walk, followed by an RBI double by Brock Watts to make a 4-3 game. After an intentional walk to Garrett Eck, Oller made his way to the mound for Seneca taking over for starter Cody Rottinghaus and faced just two-batters to recorded the save and give Seneca the win.

Rottinghaus earned the win on the mound going six innings giving up three runs on five hits, five walks and one hit batter, while striking out four. Oller shut the door for the save on the mound and offensively was 2-4 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI earning him McDonald's "Player of the Game" honors on Kanzaland radio. Matt Haverkamp added a 3-3 night with a triple, while Nolte finished 2-3 with an RBI, helping Seneca improve to 13-6 on the season.

Marysville in the loss was led by Tommy Brinegar who was 2-3 with a double and two runs scored, while Eck was 2-2 with a walk and hit by pitch. Watts took the loss on the mound going six innings giving up four runs on nine hits and five walks and seven strikeouts. Marysville with the loss fell to 15-9 on the season.

In game two of the doubleheader at Somerset Park it was 14 walks and five Hiawatha errors that paced the way for a Sabetha 12-6 win in eight innings.

Hiawatha got on the board first making a lead-off walk in the bottom of the first inning pay dividends making it a 1-0 game after one frame and then added two more runs in the third as Brendan Steele an RBI double to highlight the inning, helping give Hiawatha the 3-0 lead.

Sabetha broke through in the fifth inning scoring five runs without a hit in the inning as the Sabetha Raptors used five walks and two Hiawatha errors to tally the five runs and take the 5-3 lead. Hiawatha responded quickly using a two RBI double by Ryker Smith to tie the game at 5-5 through five innings. Hiawatha had an opportunity to regain the lead in the six but left the bases loaded and ultimately the game went extra's.

In the top of the eight things unraveled for Hiawatha and Sabetha pounced on the opportunity scoring seven runs using six walks, a hit batter and the only the second Raptor hit of the game, a three RBI double by Blake Popkess. Hiawatha with a mountain to climb in the bottom of the eight got one run back on a solo homerun by Dakota Bayles, but that was it, with Sabetha winning 12-6.

Taylor Bauman earned the win for Sabetha in relief pitching the final two innings of the game giving up one run, on one-hit with a strikeout. Kyler Krebs started the night for Sabetha going four and two-thirds, while Tyler Hackney also pitched. Popkess had the one of the teams two hits and it was a big three RBI double hit and added a walk earning him McDonald's "Player of the Game" honors on Kanzaland, while the key to the Raptors offense was 14 walks and five Hiawatha errors. With the win Sabetha improved to 24-15 on the season.

Hiawatha in the loss was led by Smith and Bayles who each had a pair of hits, as Smith finished 2-3 with a double, walk and two RBI's and Bayles tallied a 2-4 night with two runs scored, RBI, hit by pitch and homerun. On the mound Hiawatha used four pitchers in the competition and fell to 7-26 on the season with the loss.

With Monday's action in the books that sets up a doubleheader at Somerset Park on Tuesday night in Zone 5 AA tournament. The night will start off with an elimination game between Hiawatha and Marysville at 6:00pm and then be followed by Sabetha versus Doniphan County in a winner's bracket game.
