Marysville Wins Tristch Legion Baseball Tourney After Sundays Action Rained Out

Slated for Friday, Saturday and Sunday action the 30th annual Tristch legion baseball tournament in Hiawatha featured only five games as action ended on Saturday with the rain cancelling Sunday's action in the tournament.

With Sunday's matchup between Doniphan County and Marysville cancelled, Marysville took home the tournament crown as they won both of their contests in the tournament the previous days.

Tournament started back on Friday with a pair of games that ended early as Seneca topped Donphan County 11-1, pounding out the runs to remain unbeaten on the season and move on to Saturday's action to play the winner of Hiawatha versus Marysville. Doniphan County set themselves up to play in the first game on Saturday against the loser of the Hiawatha versus Marysville contest in the first elimination game of the tournament.

In the nightcap Friday it was all Marysville as they worked past Hiawatha 10-0 in just four innings. Marysville struck early with two runs in first inning then added eight more in the second inning to move to the 10-0 win, while out hitting Hiawatha in the game 15-2. Marysville 15 hit attack was spread across the team as seven of their nine batters registered hits and eight of the nine scored runs in the contest. Aaron Schmelzle and Brock Watts both went 1-2 with run scored and two RBI, while Trevor Moser went 1-3 with two runs scored and two RBI. Cody Ketter picked up the pitching win going all four innings giving up only two hits, while striking three and hitting three batters.

For Hiawatha in the loss Jeff Costa and Shawn Green had the lone hits of the contest. With the win Marysville set up a matchup on Saturday with Seneca and Hiawatha would take on Doniphan County in the first elimination game.

On Saturday, the day setup with great weather for a triple header at Noble Park as the Tristch tournament continued with Doniphan County versus Hiawatha up first in an elimination game with Doniphan County staying alive behind a 15-4 win.

After a scoreless first two frames, Doniphan County struck first and made it an uphill battle for Hiawatha the rest of the contest. The first scores of the game came in the way of a five run third inning capped off by a Phoenix Keller grand slam for Doniphan County. Hiawatha answered in the bottom of the frame up only came up with two runs, to make it 5-2 after three.

Both Doniphan County and Hiawatha added runs in the fourth and fifth as Doniphan County posted five, Hiawatha only tallied two, giving Doniphan County a 10-4 lead going into the sixth. In the sixth the offense continued to pour in for Doniphan County with five more runs to push out to the 15-4 lead and after blanking Hiawatha in the bottom of the frame for the 15-4 win.

Dylan Gabriel pitched a complete game for Doniphan County to earn the win going six innings giving up 10 hits, four runs while striking out 16 and walking only one. Gabriel added a 2-3 offense night, while his teammates Caleb Winkel and Colton Masters lead the offensive attack with three hits each.

For Hiawatha they struggled on the mound using five pitchers with Jeff Costa registering the lone multi-hit game of any Hiawatha batter going 3-3 with two runs scored and an RBI.

With the win Doniphan County stayed alive in the tournament awaiting the loser of the Marysville and Seneca matchup, Hiawatha was eliminated.

In the winner's game from Friday Marysville and Seneca traded blows early but it was Marysville besting Seneca ultimately in the end 12-5.

Marysville took the early lead with a run in the first but Seneca quickly answered with a three run bottom of the first using a pair of RBI singles to take the lead. A run in the second and third by Marysville moved it to a tie ballgame before Seneca swayed it back into their favor with a two run third inning with big RBI double by Josh Schraad highlighting the inning.

Up 5-3 after three, Seneca had the lead but Marysville did all the scoring the rest of the way adding nine runs to grab the win. Marysville took the lead behind a seven run fourth and never looked back from that point.

Trevor Moser after giving up five runs to Seneca early shutdown Seneca after the third recording the win on the mound while tallying 11 strikeouts. Offensively for Marysville Brandon Fisher and Garrett Crome lead the way each registering three hits and helping account for seven of the teams 12 runs. Schmelzle added a 2-4 day with three RBI and a run scored.

Seneca had solid offensive nights from David Olberding, Alex Rottinghaus and Dustin Rottinghaus who each had multi-hit games, but it was their pitching struggles down the stretch that doomed them to their first loss of the season.

Marysville moved to 2-0 with the win and was a win away from the Tritsch title and would play the winner of the next elimination game between Doniphan County and Seneca.

Looking to stay alive Seneca and Doniphan County faced off for the second time on the diamond in the Tristch tournament, this time the result was different than Friday's Seneca win, as Doniphan County topped Seneca 12-7.

After struggling down the stretch against Marysville Seneca's offense opened up the game versus Doniphan County quickly with a five run first inning behind two triples, single, error and a two run homer by Eric Huerter. Huerter then added a solo homer in the second to give Seneca a quick 6-0 early lead after just two innings.

Doniphan Counties offense them awoke and the pitching of Phoenix Keller in relief pushed them ahead in the game and earned them the win. Comeback started in the third with a five run innings, then four runs in the fourth to take the lead, before adding five insurance runs in the seventh to cap the win off.

Keller in relief pitched 6 1/3 innings giving up only two runs on four hits and two walks with three strikeouts to earn the win. While, Masters lead the offense with a 3-4 game with three runs scored and two RBI, as Nathan Gaarder added two hits.

Seneca in the loss had a 3-4 night by Eric Huerter who blasted two homers and a double.

Doniphan County with the win moved to Sunday's action to take on Marysville needing a pair of wins to win the Tristch tournament. While, Seneca's tournament ended with their first two losses of the season.

Marysville and Doniphan County looking to the diamond again on Sunday had their hopes of playing dashed by the rainfall and Sunday's action was cancelled giving Marysville the tournament crown as the only team not to suffer a loss in the Tristch tournament.
