Sabetha Takes 5th & Frankfort Takes 4th at Marysville Classic Legion Tourney

Four Kansas teams and four Nebraska teams faced off against each other in this year's Marysville Classic legion baseball tournament with Sabetha and Frankfort competing in the tournament this year.

The tournament started great for Frankfort who opened up the first round with an 8-0 win over Wymore moving on the semifinals were they faced off against Lincoln out of Nebraska. It was a tight ballgame in the semifinals but Lincoln held of Frankfort for the 2-1 win, sending Frankfort to the third place game to face off with the host team in Marysville. It was another tight ballgame for Frankfort in the third place contest as they played the host Marysvill and fell 6-4, to take fourth place in the Marysville Classic.

With their 1-2 performance in the tournament Frankfort moves to 3-4 on the season.

For Sabetha, they were saddled with perhaps the toughest opening round matchup facing off with the Omaha Millard Sox out of Omaha, Nebraska, as Sabetha made it a ballgame but fell 13-9. In the loser bracket of the tournament Sabetha worked their way to a pair of wins of Fairbury, 4-3 and Wymore, 7-5 to capture fifth place in the tournament.

Against Omaha, Sabetha had an earlier deficit 6-4 after two innings, but would tie the game up in the top of the fourth with a two-run single by Taylor Bauman. Omaha then answered with a four-run bottom of the fourth to lead 10-6 after four frames. Omaha scored three more times in the sixth before Sabetha scored three in the top of seventh to try a comeback but fell short, 13-9. Kyle Stallbaumer and Keegan Schuman lead the way for Sabetha offensively in the loss with two hits, a double, a pair of runs scored and an RBI each; while five errors where the biggest detirment to Sabetha in the contest.

In the loser's bracket Sabetha picked things up to rattle off back-to-back wins to take fifth place. It started with a 4-3 win over Fairbury in a rain shortened five inning game. Down 2-0 early Sabetha cut the lead in half in the first with a single by Nolan Keim, then took the lead in the second on a Tyler Ulrich single and Kyle Stallbaumer sac fly. It was a 3-3 ballgame when Sabetha had the bases loaded in the fifth and Blake Popkess single in what was the winning run. Brendon Garrett pitched himself to the win his fourth of the season for Sabetha.

The fifth place game had Sabetha down early yet again this time to Wymore, as Wymore lead it 5-1 early on. Sabetha eventually tied the game up in the bottom of fifth behind a clutch two-out two-run single by Tyler Edelman. Going into the 6th it was 5-5 tie ballgame and Sabetha took the lead with a pair of runs in the sixth, to grab a 7-5 lead an win by that same score. Graham Howard provided the key hit in the sixth lacing a double into right field. Taylor Bauman pitched the final three innings to earn the win on the mound.

With the 2-1 record in the Marysville Classic Sabetha now sits at 12-5 on the season.
