Doniphan West Volleyball Team

The Doniphan West volleyball team posted a historic season as they finished third place at the 1A-I State Tournament this past weekend in Dodge City.

It was the first State Tournament berth in school history. They swept pool play on Friday going 3-0 before losing on Saturday in the Semi-Finals against Flint Hills.

The Mustangs would beat Pretty Prairie in straight sets to earn the third-place finish.

Some notable players for D-West include Avery Weathersbee, senior outside hitter, earned All-League honors the past two seasons. Kyra Johnson, senior setter, surpassed 1,600 career assists. Katie Johnson, sophomore middle blocker, led the Mustangs in kills and blocks this season.

Claire Cole and Belle Smith competed Friday for the volleyball team then competed at State Cross County on Saturday before going back to Dodge City to finish the volleyball tournament. Claire finished in 8th place at the State Meet while Belle finished 63rd.

Doniphan West finishes 2022 with an overall record of 38-6.
