Weathersbee Leads Doniphan West Girls to First State Appearance
Avery Weathersbee

For the first time in school history the Doniphan West girls reached the state tournament claiming the 1A-DI Sub-State Championship Saturday at Centralia in a 44-33 victory over Clifton-Clyde in the finals.

The Mustangs would have never made it that far if it was not for sophomore Avery Weathersbee who came up big and made plays in crunch time in the semifinals as Doniphan West outlasted Frankfort 57-55.

Weathersbee was good all night long scoring a game-high 24 points in the win including 15 in the first half.

What may be more impressive is the fact that she has done this off the bench, but it has earned her those crunch time minutes down the stretch and for good reason.

On the season Weathersbee is averaging just over 9 points and 5 rebounds a game while shooting near 50 percent from the floor and over 50 percent from the foul line.

She has been in double figures 10 times this season including seven of the last eight games and has been solid on the glass as well.

Weathersbee will look to continue to lead the Mustangs heading forward as the Doniphan West girls are into the state semifinals for the first time ever where they will play Norwich on Thursday in Dodge City at 7 p.m.
