Detweiler's Strong Play Has Axtell off to 2-0 Start
Isaac Detweiler

After losing an all-state player the caliber of a guy like Quinn Buessing, the Axtell Eagles entered this season looking for someone to step up and lead the boys basketball team.

Through two games the Eagles have appeared to have found that guy as sophomore Isaac Detweiler has been strong leading Axtell to two hard fought wins to open the year.

In the Eagles opening game of the season against Doniphan West Detweiler led Axtell from 11 points down in the second half to beat the Mustangs 46-41 as he scored a game-high 19 points including seven in the fourth quarter where he was a perfect 4-of-4 from the free throw line.

He followed that up with another solid outing against Wabaunsee where he led the Eagles with 15 points on three 3-pointers in a 42-41 victory.

Detweiler burst on to the season as a freshman last season on the football field and continued it onto the basketball floor where he eventually earned his way into the starting lineup averaging 10 points, three rebounds and two assists per game.

Entering this season, he knew he would have to come up big with Head Coach Jason Tynon noting before the season, “Isaac has to play bigger than what he is and control the game for us. I know that we are going to put a lot on the shoulders of a sophomore this year, but I think he can handle it.”

So far Detweiler has done just that and will to continue to lead the Eagles in the right direction with just one game this week as Friday the Eagles will host Onaga.
