The 2020 high school spring sports season was cut short due to the COVID-19 outbreak and because of that we at the MSC Sports Radio Network have decided to salute area athletes that were expected to be the top returners in their respective sports.
Unfortunately for the Valley Falls Dragons, it ends the career of senior Lucas Welborn who was going to be the far and away leader of the baseball team this season.
He had started every game since his freshman season playing in 56 games holding a .376 average with 92 RBI’s, 70 runs scored and 13 home runs.
On the mound he holds a career record of 4-4 with 50 strikeouts over just 35.4 innings while playing centerfield for the Dragons as well.
He ranks first all-time in Valley Falls history in RBI’s in a single season (40), doubles in a single-season (9) and tied for first for the most doubles in a career (18).
His total career ranks can be found at the end of this story.
Welborn in his three years helped lead the Dragons to a total record of 35-19 which includes a Northeast Kansas League title in 2017 and a league runner-up in 2019.
He earned an honorable mention all-state selection as a freshman and a junior while being named a first-team all-league selection in each of those two seasons.
Along with baseball he played football all four years and lettered each of those years while playing basketball as a freshman and junior along with being on the trapshooting team his sophomore and junior years as well.
Welborn will now look towards the future as he will attend the Washburn Institute of Technology in Topeka next year and end his baseball career as one of the best baseball players in Valley Falls history.
