Throughout the 2019-20 high school wrestling season, Atchison High School senior Nick Funk has dominated on the mats picking up tournament wins in nearly every tournament he has competed in.

On Saturday afternoon Funk guaranteed himself that his career will finish at the state tournament as he claimed second place at 285 pounds in the Class 4A Louisburg regional.

Funk went 3-1 on the day with two pins and suffered just his second loss of the year which came in the championship match against undefeated Evan Dean of Santa Fe Trail who pinned Funk and is now one pin away from setting the state record for pins in a single season with a 41-0 record.

Funk has been great all season long racking up 25 wins including five tournament championships throughout the season and earning a Kansas City-Atchison League title just two weeks ago.

He fell short of reaching the state tournament last season after falling in the championship semifinals and the consolation semifinals ending his season with a 25-8 record.

Funk now heads into the state tournament with a record of 25-2 and will open his tournament run against Caleb Haggard of Labette County who has a record of 16-12.

The Class 4A State Tournament is set to take place in Salina beginning Friday morning with live bottom of the hour reports on KNZA 103.9 FM.
