Heading into the 2019-20 season most people knew that the Valley Falls Dragons would be one of the top teams in the Northeast Kansas League with a legitimate shot to capture a league title.
What some may not have expected though is that the player leading the Dragons to a 3-0 start would be sophomore Avery Gatzemeyer who has burst onto the scene averaging over 21 points per game through the first three which includes not playing in the fourth quarter of two of those games.
He opened the year with a 22-point outing in a 68-18 beat down of Horton and then followed that up with 19 points in the Dragons 53-45 win over McLouth last Tuesday.
He delivered his best game of the night scoring wise last Friday as the sophomore poured in a game-high 23 points in 75-16 blow out win over Onaga.
After not making it onto a Northeast Kansas League all-league team a year ago, Avery has quickly showed that he could be considered one of the top players in the league by the end of the season.
Gatzemeyer and the Dragons will look to continue their success to start the year and wrap up 2019 strong this week as Valley Falls will have two road games this week beginning with Pleasant Ridge Tuesday night before wrapping up the week at Oskaloosa on Friday.
