In week six of the high school football season the Axtell Eagles put an end to a 43-game win streak for the Hanover Wildcats winning 28-26 and did so without senior quarterback Quinn Buessing who was knocked out of that game early in the first quarter.
Friday night Buessing got his shot against the Wildcats and took full advantage as he combined for four total touchdowns and Axtell punched their ticket to the state title game for the first time since 1993 with a 26-12 on the road at Hanover ending their shot at a fourth straight state title.
The Eagles jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first quarter on a touchdown run from Buessing and a conversion pass to Derek Buessing before Hanover got a score on a Jacob Jueneman 5-yard run.
From there Axtell scored two more touchdowns before halftime on a Buessing pass to Isaac Detweiler and a 22-yard pass to JJ Hart putting the Eagles up 20-6 at the half.
After a scoreless third quarter Buessing put the game away with a 12-yard run midway through the fourth quarter before Hanover got a final touchdown from Jacob Jueneman.
Buessing finished with 232 yards passing and 112 yards rushing along with nine tackles and two interceptions.
In just 10 games Buessing is up to 2,363 passing yards which is first in the 8-man ranks and inside of the top eight throughout all classes.
He has thrown for over 7,000 yards and over 100 touchdowns in his career while last season he finished second in classes in passing yards while leading the state in touchdown passes by 13.
Buessing will look to cap off one of the best careers ever seen at the 8-man level with a state championship as the Eagles are set to take on Osborne Saturday in Newton with kickoff scheduled for 3 p.m. and live coverage on Sunny 101.3.
