It’s been a near picture perfect first month of the 2019 season for the Valley Heights volleyball team as the Mustangs are off to a 21-4 start overall and a perfect 8-0 in Twin Valley League play.
A major key to the success of the Mustangs this season has been the play of junior Emma Toerber who put together a solid weekend in Valley Heights’ second place finish at the Axtell Invitational.
Valley Heights went 4-1 in the tournament falling in the championship to Diller-Odell and Toerber collected over 25 kills throughout the four wins.
Her highlight of the tournament was a 7-kill match against Linn which added to her team lead of kills on the season.
Toerber leads the Mustangs with 156 kills on the year and has three matches so far this season with 10-plus kills including a 15-kill performance September 14 in a win over Holton.
She has also recorded 27 aces this season and has posted a 90 percent serve percentage while adding 49 blocks.
As a sophomore Toerber fell just short of picking up all-league and all-state honors as she posted 260 kills on the year while recording 296 digs.
Toerber and the Mustangs will look to continue their strong start to the season Tuesday at home as TVL play rolls along with Valley Heights hosting a triangular featuring Hanover and Linn.
