After a week one 28-8 loss to Rossville the Centralia Panther football team was looking for a spark to get the 2019 back on the right track.
Friday night they got just that and some, as senior quarterback Kamble Haverkamp rushed 36 times for 217 yards and six touchdowns in the Panthers 54-32 upset of Riley County.
Haverkamp also added over 100 kick return yards against the Falcons, who at the time were ranked No. 5 by many media outlets in Class 2A.
He recorded touchdown runs of three, 10, one, one, three and two yards and through two games has now run for 318 yards and those six scores averaging 159 yards per game on the ground.
Haverkamp was named a first-team all-Twin Valley League selection a year ago at quarterback after rushing for nearly 1,500 yards and over 20 touchdowns a year ago and through two weeks has made a strong case towards being named the 1A player of the year.
The Panthers and Haverkamp will look to carry last week’s win into week three as Centralia plays host to St. Mary’s at 7 p.m. in yet another non-league matchup.
