Burke Deters

An opportunity was there for the taking for teams in the Class 1A-Division II Sub-State boys basketball tournament at Axtell and the host Axtell Eagles snatched up that opportunity to make the State tournament by claiming the Sub-State title.

In the Sub-State Semifinals the Eagles took down Southern Cloud 52-45 and moved into the Sub-State Championship game to play fellow Twin Valley League team in Wetmore and in the battle of the birds the Eagles flew high with a 43-33 win.

On a relatively young Eagles team senior, Burke Deters has stepped up had provided some leadership this season and during the postseason helped set the tone for Axtell in the wins. Against Southern Cloud Deters posted a season best 21 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, while following that up by scoring eight points against Wetmore and snagging 16 rebounds.

Deters has filled up the stat sheet throughout the year for Axtell scoring 9.2 points per game while adding 7.2 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.8 steals per game. Burke a multi-sport athlete is set to continue his athletic career next year at Cloud County.

The Eagles sit at 6-17 on the season and enter the Class 1A-Division II State basketball tournament as the eight seed looking to upset the one seed. Axtell tips off against Caldwell on Thursday, March 9th at 6:30pm in Dodge City for their first round State game.
