Records were broken and headlines were made last week at Emporia State University with former Hiawatha Red Hawk Brianna Schmitz at the center of those headlines.
Schmitz, a fifth year senior, broke a 21 year old record at the Central Missouri Relays last week as she broke the school record in the women’s pentathlon which was previously held by Deandra Doubrava set at the 1998 KSU Winter Pentathlon.
She set personal records in four of the five events she competed in and ultimately placed second overall in the meet.
After the strong performance she was then named the MIAA Track & Field athlete of the week and has also vaulted into the top spot in the country.
Schmitz has vastly improved since her time at Hiawatha, where she made the state tournament her senior year taking eight in the 400 meter dash while taking seventh in the high jump.
Schmitz will look to continue her strong senior campaign and work towards a possible national championship as the Emporia State track team will continue their season this weekend at the Bearcat Invitational in Maryville, Mo.
