The college basketball season is into the holiday break with most teams just finishing up their non-league schedules with league play getting underway after the first of the year.
For the Washburn University Women’s Basketball team they are in good spot heading into the break with a major reason for their success coming from the help of former Sabetha Bluejay Alexis McAfee.
McAfee is currently in her junior season as a member of the Lady Blues basketball team, and has helped Washburn off to a 6-4 record including four straight wins.
She is currently averaging just under nine points per game, and is coming off a strong performance Monday where she recorded nine points, eight rebounds, 5 assist, 1 steal and 1 block in Washburn’s 64-51 win over St. Edward’s University in Las Vegas.
McAfee has played in all 10 games this season and is currently averaging 8.9 points, 5.2 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 2.2 steals per game.
She has scored in double figures four times so far this season including a season-high 14-point outing in the opening game this season.
McAfee averaged 12 points per game last season and scored over 20 points four times with her career high being a 23-point outing in the second to last game of the season.
At Sabetha McAfee picked up first team all-state honors her senior season, while she was also named to all-state teams her sophomore and junior seasons.
McAfee will look to continue her strong junior campaign with the Lady Blues as Washburn will next be in action Dec. 31 hosting the University of Saint Mary with tip of scheduled for 2 pm.
