Perry-Lecompton extended its dominance in the series with Hiawatha, earning its 16th consecutive win over the Redhawks in a hard-fought 63-57 victory on Friday night at the roundhouse.
The matchup was intense from start to finish, played in front of a raucous crowd that created an atmosphere more reminiscent of a college game than a high school contest. After falling behind by seven points early, the Kaws used a decisive 20-6 run in the second quarter to flip the momentum, turning the deficit into a seven-point halftime lead.
Perry-Lecompton maintained its composure in the second half, fending off several Hiawatha runs to preserve the win and keep its streak alive. The game was remarkably even statistically, with the two teams combining for just 19 turnovers. Each squad finished with 29 rebounds, attempted 12 free throws, and connected on six three-pointers. Ultimately, a handful of key plays went Perry-Lecompton’s way, making the difference in a tightly contested contest.
Colby Krein led the Kaws and was named the KNZA Player of the Game after scoring a game-high 23 points, including four three-pointers. Houston Habiger narrowly missed a double-double, finishing with 13 points and nine rebounds, while Kayden Baker delivered a strong all-around performance with nine points and 12 rebounds. Easton Graves chipped in nine points, including two critical free throws in the closing moments to help seal the victory.
Hiawatha was led by Ethan Morton with 17 points. Braylen Siebenmorgen recorded a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds, while Lane Kesler added 12 points and eight rebounds. Leyton Moore contributed eight points off the bench.
With the win, Perry-Lecompton improved to 11-5 overall and 4-4 in Big East League play. Hiawatha dropped to 12-3 overall and 4-1 in league action.
