Falls City Sacred Heart multi-sport athlete Daycee Witt recorded her 1,000th career assist this past Saturday when the Irish visited the Weeping Water volleyball invite. It’s no surprise that Witt credits her success in part to her teammates – specifically naming Jentry Lechtenberg and Makinley Scholl. That’s just the type of player she is though – giving credit to others while remaining humble in her own successes.
However, one must give credit to Witt herself for all the hard work she has put in as well. Witt is a senior who participates in volleyball, basketball, and track. She’s always putting in the work to be the best at the sport that’s currently in season. She also volunteers her time working with the next generation of young athletes as well. For instance, you might catch her refereeing youth basketball on a Saturday morning before grabbing a quick bite and hopping on a bus to play later that day. Witt is also a familiar face at the state tournaments in Class D/D2. The Irish won the 2025 state basketball tournament and Witt was a vital part of that team’s success. She also participated in the Class D State Track Meet with her relay team placing 4th in the 4 X 800.
During the fall, she’s been playing volleyball for as long as she can remember and has been a part of the Sacred Heart team throughout many of those years. Witt stated, “my stepmom was the assistant high school coach for a number of years, so I was the water girl for the high school team.” Having a parent who coaches and being around the game is a common theme you see in many who grow to love the sport they play.
Over the years, the Irish volleyball team has had some ups and downs on the court but Witt’s perseverance and hard-work are part of the reason she’s been able to reach this milestone. She said, “it was definitely always a goal of mine”, though she never thought she’d reach the 1,000 career assist mark. However, to those who know her personally, the belief that she could reach that mark was always there.
It's been a struggle this season so far for the Irish who are just a quarter of the way through their schedule. They sit at 1-5 through their first six games with that first win coming this past weekend over Southern at the Weeping Water invite. However, the schedule has also been challenging for the Irish so far. Their losses this season have come against teams with a combined record of 24-12.
All of that competition could prove beneficial for this Sacred Heart team as they move forward. Daycee talked a little bit about the season so far stating, “this is my year to step up and be a leader for this team.” The goal, of course, is a trip to the state tournament at the end of the season – something the Irish haven’t done since 2022 when Witt was a Freshman. To get there though she knows it’ll be a process, stating, “we are going to have to work for this season and earn it if we want to make it to the state tournament.” If the Irish continue to improve and do find themselves playing in Lincoln later this year, they know they’ll have the setter in place to win a game there as well.
The Irish will continue their season on Tuesday when they host Diller-Odell.
Other area teams participating at the Weeping Water invite included HTRS and Auburn. The Titans went 3-1 on the day with their only loss coming to the aforementioned Auburn team. They improve their record to 4-3 on the season. Auburn went a perfect 4-0 on the weekend and won the tournament. The Bulldogs started the season 0-3 with three losses to teams with a combined record of 11-4. However, the Bulldogs played some of their best volleyball of the season and dropped just one of the nine sets they played on Saturday.
HTRS will next be in action on Tuesday with a trip to Lourdes Central Catholic while the Bulldogs will host Tri-County on Monday.
