Corning Post 216 Secures Spot in AA State Tournament

The Corning Post 216 legion baseball team secured their spot in the AA State Tournament with an 8-6 win over Hiawatha Post 66 on Saturday night in Seneca. 

Corning (14-5) jumped out to an early 6-0 lead with two runs in the first and four runs in the second. RBI's from Rayce Fisher and Brett Heideman in the first while Hunter Lamond hit a two-RBI double and Drew Gibbs hit a two-run home run in the second. 

Hiawatha (23-10) never led in the game but got to within 7-6 in the middle innings. Aston Rockey cleared the bases with a triple in a four run third while they added two more runs in the fourth. 

Corning's Aidan Talley was named the McDonald's of Hiawatha and Seneca player of the game as he pitched nearly five innings out of the bullpen and gave up just two runs on one hit with two strikeouts while also reaching base three times. 

Corning will head to Concordia July 26-29 for the AA State Tournament. It's the second straight summer that Corning has qualified for the State Tournament. All games in Concordia will be broadcast live on 103.9 KNZA. 

Hiawatha will play Doniphan County on Saturday at 3:00 PM with the winner advancing with Corning to Concordia and the loser going home for the summer.
