The Corning Post 216 baseball team opened the Zone 3 Tournament on Thursday night in Seneca with a 15-5 win over Doniphan County Post 55.
Corning (13-5) scored early and often as they led 9-0 after two innings. They scored seven runs in the second inning which included a two-RBI single by Brett Heideman and an RBI single by Miles Wimberly.
Doniphan County (14-15) got to within 9-5 after they posted four runs in the fourth inning, highlighted by a two-RBI single from Dustin Veach.
Corning would put the game away with three runs in the fifth inning and three more runs in the sixth inning. Rayce Fisher had two, two-RBI doubles which highlighted that six run stretch. Heideman drove in three runs while Drew Gibbs reached base four times and drove in two.
Fisher was named the KNZA McDonald's of Hiawatha and Seneca player of the game as he finished the game 2-for-3 with two doubles, two walks, three runs, and five RBI's.
Veach led Doniphan County reaching base in all four of his at-bats including piling up seven stolen bases including a steal home in the fourth inning.
The tournament continues Friday night in Seneca for both teams with Doniphan County playing Seneca at 6:00 PM in an elimination game while Corning plays Hiawatha in a winners bracket after that.
