Royals Review: Rocky Road Trip Not So Sweet for KC

The Kansas City Royals (6-20) didn’t get swept in any of their series over the past week, but they didn’t win of them either.

Last Friday, they were faced with the impossible task of trying to best Shohei Ohtani, who came into the game without any losses and a sub-1.00 ERA.

It did not end well.

Ohtani’s final six outs were all via the strikeout. The phenom from “the land of the rising sun” went seven full shutout innings and struck out eleven total while giving up just two hits and two walks.

Ohtani has an MVP, but doesn’t have a Cy Young award yet, he is certainly on track for one now.

The Angels have been dealing with organizational disfunction and offensive productivity issues of their own and they almost let Kansas City sneak out of L.A. with a win on Friday night.

The difference in the game was a Chad Wallach two-run home run in the third to give them a 2-0 victory.

Saturday’s game was a fun bounce back game for Kansas City, resulting in an 11-8 victory. Even better, it came in comeback fashion with five runs in the top of the ninth inning.

Edward Olivares would deliver the game-tying run on a sacrifice fly and MJ Melendez would be responsible for the game-winning run after getting beaned with the bases loaded.

Hunter Dozier ended up with three hits and three RBI, and Matt Duffy also got three hits, three runs and an RBI. Melendez would also have a multi-hit, multi-RBI game with two of each.

Pitching obviously wasn’t great with Greinke surrendering four runs and the bullpen doing the same.

On Sunday, Ward-Trout-Ohtani would hit back-to-back-to-back bombs to lift the Halos over the Royals by a final score of 4-3.

Bobby Witt Jr. would hit a solo homer in the seventh inning which cut the deficit to one, but they weren’t able to do much more against the Angels bullpen that they wrecked the night prior.

Kansas City started their road series at Arizona on the wrong foot with a Monday 5-4 loss. Aroldis Chapman picked a poor time to give up his first earned run of the season as it was the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Just like the series in Los Angeles, the Royals were able to get a win in the second game of the series with a 5-4 victory on Tuesday.

Singer looked great on the hill and gave up just one run with six strikeouts in six innings. He would get the win, but the bullpen almost squandered it.

The D-Backs were down by three runs in the bottom of the eighth and got an RBI single from Emmanuel Rivera, but Witt Jr. made a throwing error which brought home another run. Thankfully, they didn’t surrender any more runs.

The Royals would hit a brick wall on Wednesday and his name was Zac Gallen. There is a reason why he has finished in the top ten of the Cy Young voting twice in his career.

He went 6.1 innings and struck out twelve batters giving up just four hits and no walks in the process. He’s definitely poised for another run at a Cy Young.

Kansas City’s pitching wasn’t bad, but they allowed an RBI single to Evan Longoria in the fourth inning and an RBI single to Rivera in the fifth which was good enough for the DBacks to get the win.

A 7-1 road loss to the Minnesota Twins on Thursday made it six consecutive series opener losses for the Royals.

After a five-hit outing on Wednesday, the Kansas City offense took a step in the wrong direction with just three hits.

Greinke also pitched his worst performance of the season to date with seven earned runs on eight hits in just 3.2 innings.

Zack has now strung a few rough outings together after a solid start to the season. He also has yet to get in the win column.

After the four-game weekend series up north concludes, they finally return to Kaufmann on Tuesday against the Baltimore Orioles. However, it might be to their detriment, considering they are just 1-12 in their home stadium.

Then next weekend, they will take on the “dead man walking” team of the American League in the Oakland Athletics.
