Local Athletes Nominated for Sports in Kansas Player of the Year Basketball Awards

The high school basketball season is a little over a week complete and postseason awards have continued to roll in with Sports in Kansas over the weekend releasing their finalist for player of the year awards for each classification featuring several local athletes.

On the girl’s side in Class 4A just one local girl is up for the award in Atchison’s Katy Harris who had multiple 25-plus point games this season.

The Class 3A finalists is loaded with local talent and all from the Big 7 League in the Sabetha duo of Leah Renyer and Melinna Schumann, Nemaha Central’s Cassidy Corby and Royal Valley’s Mahpiya Irving.

Player of the year finalists are rounded out on the girl’s side in Class 2A by Valley Heights’ Emma Yungeberg and in 1A-DI with Doniphan West’s Chloe Clevenger.

On the boy’s side just three local guys were nominated including two from the Big 7 League in Holton’s Kale Purcell in Class 4A along with Royal Valley’s Nahcs Wahwassuck in 3A.

Hanover’s Emmitt Jueneman rounds out the player of the year nominees as he earned the selection in Class 1A-DII.

These awards are set to be announced on Saturday along with all-state teams from Sports in Kansas.
