Twin Valley League Teams Highlight Centralia Cross Country Invitational

The cross country season continued for many area teams on Saturday at the Centralia Invitational as many Twin Valley League teams, along with a few other area squads took to the course this past Saturday morning.

The top area team performance went to the Washington County Tigers in the boy’s competition as the Tigers raced to a first place performance behind seven runners in the Top 30 on the day, finishing with 25 points. Taking second place was the Wetmore Cardinals who finished with 69 points, while Valley Heights finished with 90 points to take third place. The rest of the team scores finished with Marysville fourth, Pike Valley fifth, Onaga sixth, Jefferson County North seventh, Frankfort eighth, Wabaunsee ninth, Axtell 10th and Centralia 11th.

While on the girl’s side of competition Pike Valley captured the team title in a tight battle with the host Centralia as Pike Valley finished with 36 points, just three points ahead of the Panthers who took second place as a team, while Axtell rounded out the top three, finishing third by edging out Jefferson County North who placed fourth. The rest of the team scores finished with Washington County fifth, Onaga sixth and Frankfort seventh.

On their way to a first place finish as a team Washington County was led by the top boy’s performance individually on the day as Dylan Hodgson continued his strong senior year by posting a time of 16:22 to win by 1:39. His teammates, Eric Miller and Kyle McGatlin joined him in the Top 10 finishing fifth and seventh with times of 18:16 and 18:28, while Jefferson Simmons placed 13th for the Tigers (19:02). In the girl’s race Madison Stone and Cheyenne Helms both notched Top 20 performances finishing 12th and 17th, respectively with times of 19:30 and 20:16.

Frankfort Wildcat freshman, Brodric Shirley continue to perform strong as he placed second in the boys race behind a time of 18:01, while Alex Roeder also grabbed a Top 20 finish for the Wildcats placing 15th (19:04).

The Wetmore Cardinal boys took second place as a team and were led by Aaron Achten who ran his way to a third place finish behind a time of 18:10, while Jeremy Hoelscher finished 16th (19:06) for the Cardinals.

The host Centralia Panthers had the best area girls performer as Sadie Jones raced to fourth place with a time of 17:44, while Kaitlyn Becker grabbed ninth place with a time of 19:08 and Madison Beockman raced to 16th place (20:02). In the boys competition, Dylan Boeckman post a time of 19:01 earning him 12th place on the day.

Valley Heights Mustang, Adrian Pishney raced to a fourth place finish in the boys competition after posting a time of 18:14, while Alex Hardin also finished in the Top 20 placing 18th (19:11). Ilexus Rose grabbed another Top 10 finish for the Mustangs placing eighth in the girl’s race with a time of 18:42.

Axtell, Onaga, JCN, Marysville, Clifton-Clyde and Hanover all had Top 20 finishers on the day, too. For the Axtell Eagles, freshman, Chelsea Smith raced to the best showing placing sixth with a time of 18:05, while Susan Peschel placed 10th behind a time of 19:18. In the boy’s race, Oliver Schmitz and Burke Deters placed 14th and 20th with times of 19:04 and 19:18.

The Onaga Buffaloes got two Top 10 performances in the boys race as Michael Eisenbarth placed sixth (18:17) and Luke Marten finished eighth (18:28), while in the girls race Maggie Revell also finished in the Top 10 placing seventh (18:19) and Alexis VanDonge finished right outside the Top 10 placing 11th (19:27).

JCN was led by junior, Carissa McAfee who raced her way to a fifth place finish in the girls race with a time of 17:45, while Rebecca Malin placed 19th for the lady Chargers (20:39). Brysen Weishaar and Ted Sharp each grabbed Top 20 finishes in the boys race placing 11th (18:58) and 20th (19:13), respectively.

For Marysville, Zach Pieschl led the way in the boys race finishing ninth (18:35), while Grace Stohs had the best lady Bulldog showing placed 14th (19:47) and Tabor Smith also finished in the Top 20, taking 18th place (20:33).

Clifton-Clyde Eagle, Abby Sikes grabbed 20th place in the girl’s competition with a time of 20:45. While, Hanover Wildcat, Michael Jueneman raced to a tenth place finish in the boys competition with a time of 18:49.
