Highland Women Fall in OT in National Title Game

On Saturday night in Kansas City, the Highland CC women's basketball team lost a heart breaking overtime game to Mesa (AZ) 82-72 to finish 2nd Place in the NJCAA Division II National Tournament. The #4 seed Lady Scotties ended the 2013-14 season with a 33-3 record, best in school history, while improving on their 29-6 record and 5th place national tournament finish in 2012-13.

Highland shot under 20 percent from the three-point line in Saturday night's loss and was outrebounded 50-39.  The biggest difference however, was at the foul line was Highland was just 15-21 at the charity stripe and Mesa went 35-41 in their second striaght year to make the championship contest.  Julia Alves led HCC with 18 points before becoming one of three Scotties to foul out, while Ryann Bowser added 15 points in the loss.    

Ryann Bowser, a sophomore from Holton High School and Julia Alves, a sophomore from Brazil were both named to the National Tournament Team.  Both of them, along with sophomores, Ashley Torrez (Puerto Rico) and Krystal Cohrn (Topeka, KS) also earned all Jayhawk Conference honors this season.
