Holton 53, Hugoton 41
The Holton Lady Wildcats advanced to the Class 4A Division 2 State semifinals with an impressive 53-41 opening round win over #3 seed Hugoton. On Wednesday night at Hartman Arena in Park City, Holton emerged from an early 5-5 tie and took the lead for good. Ahead 23-18 at halftime, Holton freshman, Ashlyn Weilert hit a hot streak and made four treys for a 14-point third quarter and Holton streched the lead to double-digits.
The Lady Cats went up by as many as 18 late in the game before closing their 12th win in their last 13 contests. Weilert, who had made just 5 trifecta's all season, finished with six three-pointers and a career high 24 points while the consistent senior leader, Kyrstie Miller added 16 points to go along with 10 rebounds and 7 steals.
Holton forced 20 turnovers and held the Lady Eagles (19-4) to their second fewest point total of the season. Holton made 10 of 12 free throws, improving to 16-7 on the season and advancing to face #3 seed Frontenac (55-46 winner over Wichita Trinity) in the 6:30 semifinal on Friday night. Fellow Big 7 foe, Santa Fe Trail girls also advance to the semifinals and will face defending 4A Champion, Burlington.
