Sacred Heart and Sterling Girls Basketball Teams Win State Trophies

 (KLZA) The Pioneer Conference had a bid weekend at the Nebraska Girls State Basketball Tournament bringing home three trophies.

Friend won the Class D1 championship defeating Humphrey St. Francis 44-43 in the title game.

The Sterling Jets placed second in Class D1 losing in the title game to Wynot 53-38.  For Wynot it is the fourth straight title in Class D2.

Jordan Lempka led the Jets in the title game with 16 points and 10 rebounds.  Freshman point guard Taylor Cockerill scored 12.

Sterling finished the season 20-8.

Falls City Sacred Heart brings home a third place trophy after defeating Giltner 55-48 on Saturday.  Freshman Halee Heits led the Irish with 14 points on the day.  Abby Magdanz added 10 and Lexi Barnes hit three long shots to finish with 9 points.

The Irish finish 27-3, setting a school record for victories in a season. Two of the teams losses were at the hands of state champions Friend and Wynot.

Named to the All-tournament team was  Maggie Goltz for the Irish and Jordan Lempka for the Jets. In Class D1 Taylor Menke and Anne Rohrig of Friend were selected All-Tournament.
