Onaga Takes Fourth in Mid-East Wrestling Tournament

As the wrestling regular season starts to come to a close, teams start to gear up for post season play and the Onaga Buffalos did that with the Mid-East league wrestling tournament, earning a fourth place team finish of the eight teams competing.

Onaga on the day was paced by a pair of first place performances, two second place finishes, two third place showing and two fourth place days, also. Buffalos also had wrestlers take home a fifth, sixth and eighth place, too.

Trenton Ross (120lbs) and Dustin Blow (195lbs) both finished the day with perfect records during the tournament and first place showings for the Buffalos. Ross finished the day 3-0 at 120lbs winning his first match by major decision 11-0, followed that up with a pinfall win (2:44) and then won his last match by injury default. For Blow, the sixth ranked wrestler at 195lbs in 3-2-1A he notched a 5-0 day to claim first place. Blow opened the day with a pair of pinfall wins in 32 and 31 seconds, respectively and followed those up with a major decision 11-1 win to get into the semifinals. In the semi's Blow continue to win posting an 8-2 decision victory before finishing the day off with a 12-11 decision win in the championship bout.

Second place performances were earned by Andrew Beck (152lbs) and Jonathan Fairbanks (113lbs). Beck the third ranked wrestler at 152lbs in 3-2-1A posted a 4-1 record on the day earning a spot in the semifinals with a bye, 29 second pinfall and 16-3 major decision wins. In the semifinals Beck won via technical fall 19-4 earning a spot in the championship bout were he faced the number wrestler in his weight class at 3-2-1A from Rossville. Beck fell in the championship bout via a 10-5 decision. For Fairbanks he finished 2-1 on the day with a pair of pinfall wins in 3:32 and 2:53 but loss via a major decision 9-0 in his final bout of the day.

The top flight showings continued to role in for the Buffalos with Caleb Frederick (170lbs) and Kyle Ames (182lbs) both notching third place finishes. Frederick put together a 3-2 day, while Ames did the same posting a 3-2 mark and both won third place matches via forfeits.

Jacob Bryan (132lbs) and Brandon Merriman (106lbs) both took home fourth place showings both going just 1-3 on the day. Jeffery Chestnut (138lbs) took home fifth place by winning his final three matches of the day (one match was a bye) to post a 3-2 record. Quentin Lara (160lbs) added a sixth place showing to the day for Onaga going 2-3 in action, while Kirstanna Hill (145lbs) placed eighth on the day.

Onaga Buffalos now gear up for Regional wrestling action February 21st and 22nd and will compete at Sabetha high school Regional with the rest of the listening area teams.
