Axtell Eagles hadn't played a game in 13 days and Onaga 10 days because Mother Nature through a wrench into high school sports schedule with the winter weather and when the two teams took to the floor on Friday night, Axtell looked un-phased by the layoff while Onaga struggled.

Eagles flew to the sweep of the Buffalos at home with a 63-29 win in the girl’s matchup and 49-23 win in the boys contest.

Night started with the Lady Eagles of Axtell soaring out to an 11-0 start to the game against Onaga and lead 15-5 after the first quarter of action and never looked back. Lead stretched to 32-16 at the half as Axtell continued to force Onaga turnovers in the second quarter and in one sequence Axtell sophomore, Kiersten Talbot stole the ball three straight times and scored a layup in transition.

Onaga Buffalos battle multiple struggles throughout the game with turnovers and foul trouble and saw things fully slip away after Axtell put together a 13-5 third quarter of action. Axtell finished the game with an 18-8 fourth quarter and was 11-16 from the free throw line shooting 69%, compared to their normal 48% from the line this season as a team to win 63-29.

On the night Talbot paced the way for Axtell with a new season high scoring 21 points and earned Community National Bank "Player to Bank On" on KMZA, while fellow sophomore, Courtney Heinen tallied 16 points including going 6-8 from the charity stripe. Megan Buessing chipped in nine points and Anna Buessing had one of her best games scoring eight points to help Axtell to 10-5 on the season and 6-2 in league play.

After that the Buffalos woes as of recent continued as they only registered four field goals the remaining three quarters of action.

Eagles really pushed out the lead with a 17-3 third quarter and cruised to the 49-23 victory. Axtell who seemed to find consistent outside shooting and spreading of the offense points scored against Troy in their last game in the TVL tournament, continued that trend against Onaga hitting seven three's.

Senior, Payton Heinen once again led Axtell posting 19 points and grabbing 14 rebounds earning him Community National Bank "Player Bank On" honors on KMZA. Fellow senior, Christian Buessing joined Heinen in double figures with 14 points, hitting four three-pointers, while Shane Talbot, Derek Porting and Zach Heinen all hit a three-pointer on the night, too. With the win Axtell improved to 10-5 on the season and 6-2 in league play.

Onaga with the loss continues a tailspin as of recent falling to 6-7 on the season, losing their last six games. Buffalos on the night battled foul trouble with big man, Jarod Gronewoller who finished the night with eight points to lead Onaga despite missing a majority of the second quarter.

Teams get back to action again on Tuesday as Onaga heads back out on the road for a league matchup against Frankfort and Axtell plays host to Pawnee City in a non-league showdown.
