Horton Girls and Jackson Heights Boys Win Friday

The Lady Chargers stayed unbeaten in the NEKL (3-0) heading into a showdown against JCN on Tuesday as Horton jumped to a 12-4 lead at Jackson Heights on Friday and never trailed in route to an 8 point victory.  The Lady Cobras tied the game at 20 just before halftime, but that was when Sarah Coversup was on the Horton bench for nearly 10 minutes with foul trouble.  After halftime, Coversup scored 16 of her 20 points and hit 5 of 7 free throws to prevent any Cobra comeback.  Loagan Rodvelt added 12 points and Mariah Hisle had 9 for Horton, who made 14 of 22 charity tosses on the night.  Jackson Heights was only 3 of 4 at the foul-line but hit the only five treys in the game, four of those by Jessica Keehn who scored a season high 20 points.  Jordan Wells hit the other trifecta and finished with 9 for Jackson Heights who is now 3-6 overall and 1-3 in the NEKL with their fourth straight defeat.  

The boys game was fast paced and high scoring with Horton taking an early five point lead, but then falling down 26-16 and trailing 35-33 at halftime.  The Chargers started the third quarter strong and grabbed a four-point advantage again, but could never sustain a lengthy run and Jackson Heights was pretty unstoppable on offense all night in route to a season high 79 points.  The Cobras, who had scored at least 74 points now in three contests, got a season high 28 points from Cameron Thomas, who also had 27 earlier in the week in a a 67-50 victory against Jeff County North.  Cole Oldbering hit three shots behind the arc and scored 15 while Preston Richter chipped in 13 and Jackson Heights made 19 of 27 free throws improving to 8-1 on the season and 3-1 in the NEKL.  Horton got 18 from Trey Dishon, who was battling an injury in the game and Dakota Bayles led teh Chargers with 21 points in the loss.  Alex Cowley added 10 before the Chargers dropped to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in league play, hitting only 7 of 16 free throws and committing 6 more turnovers than their foe.   

Horton gets JCN on Tuesday, with that game live on KAIR 93.7 FM - while Jackson Heights host Valley Falls with live coverage on KNZA 103.9 FM this Tuesday evening, January 14th.
