Falls City Sacred Heart Wins 7th Football State Title

Falls City Sacred Heart fell behind early Monday in the Class D-2 State Championship football game at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln 8-0.  The Irish scored on their first possession to cut the lead to 8-7 and then went on to score the next 49 points to take a 56-8 lead before finally defeating the Stuart Broncos 63-14.

For the Irish the win caps a perfect 13-0 season.  This is the seventh football state title in school history, but the first since 1994.

Stuart finished the season 11-2, losing only to the top two ranked teams in class D-2.  

Sacred Heart outgained the Broncos 449 yards to 272 and held quarterback Alex Kunz to just 70 yards rushing and 161 yards passing.

Irish senior quarterback Chaz Dunn capped a recrod setting season with 234 yards through the air and five touchdown passes to raise his school-record season total to 36,  15 better than the previous record.  Dunn finished the season with new school records for completions in a season and a career, yards in a season, and pass attempts for a season.

On Monday touchdown passes were caught by Sean Strasheim, Colin Niemeyer who finishes with the school record for career rectptions,  Sawyer Kean and a pair to Austin Malone.

Malone also returned a punt 43 yards for a touchdown and had 95 receiving yards.

Junior runningback Sawyer Kean picked up 134 yards on teh ground and scored a pair of touchdowns.  Kean finished the season with 1,532 rushing yards, the second best total in a single season for an Irish palyer and he scored 34 touchdowns, also second on the list for a single season.  

It was a dominant day for the Irish linemen as well. Sacred Heart did not allow a sack or even a quarterback hurry in the game.  In addition,  until a kneel down at the end of the game,  Sacred Heart did not have a negative play from scrimmage.

Stasheim had the only interception on the day for Sacred Heart. He also blocked a punt in the game.  Dan Keithley had 7 tackles along with Chaz Dunn, Logan Scheitel and Jarod Fiegener.  Keithley also had a sack and 2.5 tacles for losses and three quarterback hurries.  

More than 1,500 attended the title game in Lincoln.
