Hiawatha Girls 1st, Boys 2nd at Cross Country Regionals; ACCHS and Pleasant Ridge Girls Qualify for State

On Saturday all the area Class 3A teams dueled in cross country action in Sabetha for a right compete at the state competition next Saturday in Lawrence at Rim Rock and at the end of the day it was the area teams highlighting the competition as some other teams were, also in the Regional.

The Hiawatha Red Hawks cross country team continued to do what they do best that is have top flight finishes not just by a few individuals but as a team in both the boys and girls competitions, as the girls won the team Regional title and the boys notched second place. The Hiawatha boys were the only area boy’s squad to finish in the top three to qualify for state, but the ACCHS and Pleasant Ridge girls joined Hiawath in the top three to earn a spot at State. The Tigers took home second and Pleasant Ridge finished third as a team.

Hiawatha Red Hawks girls finished with 48 points to win the Regional title by 22 points. Red Hawks girls were paced by Class 4A Sabetha Regional champ, Jordan Puvogel who won the race with the time of 16:06, winning the competition by 17 seconds. Freshman, Molly Kettler rounded out the top 10 posting a time of 17:27. Sophomores, Kailey Davis and Mykah Barnes took home 13th and 17th place performances, while freshman, McKenna Gilpin joined them in the top 20, placing 19th. Katie Rosa and Jada Rosa finished out the field for Hiawatha both finishing in the top 30, taking 28th and 29th place respectively.

For the boys squad of Hiawatha they notched second place as a team behind Riley County who took first. Sophomore, Brandt Houk led the charge notching a ninth place finish behind a time of 17:39 and senior, Tyler Boeckman finished right behind him in tenth with a time of 17:46. Senior, Baxter DeFore took home 15th place, while junior Conner Winters raced to a 21st place finish for the Red Hawks and Beau Oldridge finished in the top 30, taking 30th place. Brendan Steele notched a 39th place finish, while Jesse Quinn competed, also for Hiawatha.

The ACCHS lady Tigers took home second as they were led by five finishers in the top 22 at Regionals. Sophomore, Madison Bissell led the charge for the Tigers taking home 11th place just six seconds outside of the top 10. Fellow sophomores, Tiffany Gilmore and Beba Scholz followed Bissell taking 15th and 18th place finishes, respectively. While twins Mackenzie and Maddison Forbes ran to finishes of 20th and 22nd places for the Tigers. The lone other Tiger runner, Caitlin Fuller placed 43rd for the team.

Pleasant Ridge lady Rams eked out a third place team performance by just five points as Sabetha was right on their tails. Junior, Kristina Silvers lead the way for the Rams taking home a top 10 finish racing to a time of 17:13, good for sixth place on the day. Her teammate, Hailey Worthington took home 14th, while Rachel Hattok placed 25th for the Rams. Pleasant Ridge's performances were rounded out by Skylar Ling, Syvannah Williams and Peyton Gould who placed 34th, 35th and 36th, respectively.

Sabetha, Marysville and Nemaha Valley also will have runners competing at the state competition with top 10 finishers on the day at Regionals.

For the Bluejays both teams missed out on third place by single digit margins but junior, Corbin Cox and freshman, Keegan Cox raced to top 10 finishes to qualify for the 3A state competition. Corbin posted a time of 17:05 and took home fourth place, while Keegan placed seventh behind a time of 17:24.

Nemaha Valley saw junior, Colin Lierz continue a strong junior campaign by placing eighth with a time of 17:27 to qualify for state.

Marysville took home a pair of top three finishers including the boy’s Regional champ in junior, Joe Smith who raced to a time of 16:16 to win the boys race by nine seconds. Sophomore, Bryclin Alstrom took home third in the girl’s race finishing with a time of 16:58.

Oskaloosa, Horton and Riverside all had competitors from the area, also at Regionals.

Teams and runners now turn their attention to the state competition this coming Saturday, November 2nd in Lawrence at Rim Rock.
