Sabetha Girls Tennis Closes Out Regular Season with Strong Showing at Washburn Rural Invite

With Regionals on the horizon the girl’s tennis 2013 regular season action has started to come to a close and the Lady Bluejays of Sabetha closed out the season competing in the All Comers Washburn Rural Invitational on Wednesday and finished the day with plenty of strong performances.

Continuing to dominate on the court it was the doubles tandem of Amy Wysong and Ellie Montgomery cruising to another first place finish going a perfect 3-0 in the doubles number one competition with wins of 8-3, 8-6 and 8-0 in the first place match. Amy and Ellie will be riding plenty of momentum headed into Regionals as they are 23-3 on the season.

The tandem of Courtney Plattner and Jordyn Wells also competed in the doubles competition number one and after falling 8-6 in the opening round they finished the day 2-1 with back-to-back wins 8-6 and 8-5 to capture fifth place in the bracket of doubles number one competition.

In the doubles competition number two it was Jena Winkler and Lilly Brownlee leading the way for the Bluejays taking second place with a 2-1 record. Jena and Lilly registered 8-0 and 8-4 wins in their first two competitions, before falling 8-5 in the first place match. The teams of Abby Manning and Lindsey Chadwell and Savanna Metzger and Laura Edelman, also competed in the doubles number two bracket action. Manning and Chadwell posted a 2-2 record to notch a sixth place performance; rotating wins and losses on the day with an 8-5, 8-2 wins and 8-3 and 8-4 losses. For Metzger and Edelman it was a 3-1 day and ninth place performance as they opened the day with an 8-5, loss but closed the day with three straight wins 8-4, 8-3 and 8-4 to grab ninth place.

Singles competition was highlighted by and pair of fourth place performances for the Bluejays. Lexi Wenger in singles number one competition posted a 2-2 record finishing in fourth. Lexi had a bye in the opening round and then registered a 8-6 win, but lost the next two matches 8-0 and 8-4 falling in the third place match. Lauren Menold grabbed the other fourth place singles finish for Sabetha on the day going 2-2 in competition, grabbing 8-3 and 8-1 wins to start the day then falling 8-1 and 8-6 in a tough third place match.

Alexa Menold, Nicole Brey and Erica Tangeman all, also competed in singles competition for the Bluejays on the day as Alexa finished with a sixth place finish and Nicole and Erica took home 10th place finishes. Menold rotating wins and losses on the day to finish 2-2 grabbing 8-1 and 8-2 wins, while falling in tough battles of 8-4 and 8-6 in fifth place match. Brey wrapped up her day with a 1-2 performance with her win coming in her second match of the day, 8-4. For Tangeman it was a 2-2 record in action winning a pair of matches after opening the day with a loss 8-5, she had a Bye and an 8-1 win then fell in the ninth place match 8-7 forcing a tiebreaker (7-2).

The Bluejays have soared to great performances throughout the entire 2013 season and close it out against tough competition with a strong showing and now turn their attention to Regionals in Leavenworth host by Immaculata to start on Friday October 11th.
