Sabetha Keeps Winning With Sweep of Holton

GIRLS = Sabetha 31, Holton 21

Holton got off to a great start with a 6-0 and 9-2 advantage, but then struggled mightily to score the rest of the night as Sabetha went on a 20-0 run over the next 12 minutes of basketball and led 22-11 at halftime. Both teams scored less than 10 points total in the second half.

Mary Lukert was terrific with 16 points and Jessica Gruber added 8 as the Lady Jays improved to 12-7 on the season and won their second game of the week scoring less than 32 points. The Lady Jays have also now won five of their last six games and are 7-2 in their last nine. 

 Holton had 18 turnovers and was led by Brooke Willcott and Elizabeth Schuster with 8 points each. The Wildcats are now 7-12 on the season.

BOYS = Sabetha 54, Holton 42

In a battle between the top two teams in the Big 7 League, the game was tied at 13 after one quarter. Sabetha took a 29-24 halftime edge then put the game away with a 12-4 third period. Despite battling foul-trouble, Sabetha was able to protect their lead and hit 13 of 18 free throws, including 10 of 12 by Matthew Garber who scored 26 points. Christian McAfee and Davis Rokey each added 8 points as the #1 ranked team in 3A remained undefeated at 19-0 and secured an outright Big 7 title and top seed in sub-state.

Holton had won four straight but fell to 12-7 overall and 10-3 in the Big 7 with Ashton Schrick scoring 10 points in a balanced attack. Leading scorers Tyson Snyder and Matt Lierz who both held below half their season scoring average while Parker Crouch and Kobe Black each scored all 8 of their points in the first half.

Holton concludes their regular season Tuesday versus Perry Lecompton while Sabetha battles Hiawatha.
